I have a GTX 1070, Should I buy a second for SLI or...?

Blazzy

I want to upgrade my computer but I want to keep it as low-cost as possible. Would running a second 1070 in SLI be the most cost-effective option? I'd want to buy it used on eBay or something because it's out of stock everywhere except at a ridiculous price. My concern is that I've heard a lot of bad things about support for SLI. Any advice?

No because SLI scaling is an unstable factor. It's not like RTX 2070 Super or 2080 for $600 is that expensive. you could also wait for 3rd party cards of the RX 5700 XT

It’s not worth it. Very few games see improvements from SLI, some games even see worse performance. Often times the games that do see improvements are marginal at best. My recommendation would be to list your current 1070 on eBay, then take the money you get from the selling it + the money you would have spent on a second 1070 to get a 2060/2070 super or 5700 or 5700xt.

It certainly looks really cool if you're into that

But otherwise I will recommend it, since a single powerful GPU is always a more reliable boost in performance

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Your best bet is a CPU upgrade, or selling your GPU and getting something like a RX 5700 XT or 2070 Super.

What is your monitor's resolution/refresh rate?

I don't think it's worth it to go for a 1440p 144hz display over a 1080p 144hz. You aren't getting that more more detail. Maybe go for a 1440p 21:9 display.

I'd probably just hold onto your cash for now, wait for 2080/Super prices to drop a lot, or for amd's "big" navi card to drop sometime in the future.

SLI/Crossfire isn't worth it, especially now.

I sold my 1070 to get a 2070s that is still on backorder. I would wait for prices to settle down before making any decisions. I would say 1440p is a nice step up if you want to look at monitors.

If you had enough cpu for it sure.

Id rather spend 200 on a 1070 instead of 500+ for another card.

You get almost double the pixel density (78%).

So I would say it makes a pretty big difference. Now you also have to understand that it will also drop your fps similarly. Maybe now 78%, but probably by around 50%.

2560x1440 at 27" is about 109 ppi

1920x1080 at 24" is 91 ppi

it's really not that significant, especially if you go for an ultra-wide 1440p instead which has more benefits.

I mean that’s some fuzzy math right there. He gets a sharper, larger, and likely higher quality display if he goes to 1440p. 1440p is also really nice for productivity since you can fit more word documents or excel sheets on a single screen.

Still better off with a 1440p 21:9 display of some kind IMO. Might be able to find one used and cheap.

SLI's basically dead, would definitely recommend re-selling, and getting a 5700 or 2060 Super. Much better value, performance, and compatability, especially for a nice 144hz experience at ultra.

It depends.

I away say if you play a game all the time that supports SLI it can be a good idea.

Here is a video.

This is about the performance I got with my GTX 1080 tis in SLI.
