Why is my GTX 970 painfully slower than my GTX 1050 Ti in some specific stuff?

bejamartins

My main examples have been in AC Odyssey. Everything runs faster on 970 as I would expect with the exception of slow motions, like assassination events. With the same settings my 1050 Ti would be between 25 to 30 fps while my 970 run at over 40 in most cases with ocasional falls to 20-ish. But in these events it falls bellow 10, what didn't happen with 1050 Ti.

Could it be that is taking advantage of any special API instructions or optimization on the 1050 Ti?

1050ti is cooler, maybe its throttling.

that makes sense cause it uses more power and it has more heat

970 is pretty hot compared to 1050ti.

It uses 140watt of power vs 70watt on 1050ti.

My temps in my 970 are peaking at 65ºC.

Playing games. Idle goes around 35.

idle temp isn't the best but not the worst but that temp shouldn't really be throttling the card when playing games

Maybe it is a VRAM limitation?

I can't seem to think of a reason why it would dip in those specific scenes otherwise.

Check the 970 stats while it is running the game and see what is abnormal.

If you don't have a 2nd screen for HWM then play the game in windowed mode.

I can't think of a reason why the 1050 TI would be beating the 970, other than bad optimization.

If it's gettin hot, then the thermal paste might be dried out - I had that issue w/my friend's old ASUS gamin laptop, so I opened it up and re-applied paste for him and the idle temps plummeted.  It was either dryin out or it was dried out, so it might be worth a look to see if it's the issue; it could also be the heatsyncs aren't touchin the GPU, which'll def. increase temps, too.

*I scraped most of the 4 side units prior to takin the pic, so they weren't barren; just dryin out*

There is nothing special in this case both cards are Direct3D feature level 12_1. It's more likely that the 1050Ti doesn't hit the performance limiter, where the 970 does. So for all intents, the 970 is throttling back due to the complexity of the scene. Between Maxwell and Pascal the only notable different feature is Conservative Rendering.

It's possible that the actual driver optimization for the game might exist for Pascal where it doesn't on Maxwell, but only nVidia would really know that answer.
