DT990 vs DT880 for Gaming/Music

MontBlanco

I am looking to get a pair of open headphones/semi open headphones for gaming and listening to music.  The music I listen to is mostly Rock and Electronic and I want an open pair of headphones so I can get a bigger sound stage for when I am gaming.  It is also very important that the headphones are comfortable as I usually have long gaming sessions.

I am looking at both the DT880s and DT990s and I am not sure which one would be the best for my needs.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

880 doesn't really have the bass for electronic unless you like it pretty lean down there. 990 is a little better but the improvement is mainly in the mid to upper bass range.

I have the 990dt editions and I love them so much I don't even know why I bought the k7xx :D bass is superb on these open backs, mainly due to "half"open design (which makes the siberia v2 a very good headset), and really comfortable too.

If one does not fail at times, then one has not challenged himself.

In my experience, the Sennheiser PC 350 SE is superior the the entire DT line.

I would not buy a sound card for its surround functionality its just a gimmic really. For most games you will get a better experience out of stereo mode. The open ear headphones are going to help out a lot in the surround feel. I would look into usb dacs, after reading on here I dropped my STX for a O2+ODAC from Mayflower Electronics and don't regret it, it really does sound fantastic. If you are worried about surround sound give the video link below a try and just use regular stereo headphones, it must be headphones for it to work properly.

No offense, but I have seen many people use this video (or something similar) to convince others that any earphones/headphones are good enough for surround. Yes, you can tell which direction the sounds are coming from as long as you are using a stereo earphones/headphones, but these videos are recorded using an expensive dummy head and specialised microphones to mimic how the human ears hear. I believe most games do not use this technique to record their effects/sound tracks, so I believe this argument is invalid.

Most (if not all) 'heavy' games have their own audio engine to apply some sort of virtual surround for positional audio. Good or bad, needless to say, depends on the games themselves.
