You don't, unless you have some incredibly confidential stuff you're uploading, watch questionable content or do something that you want to hide from your ISP. If you're just going to be watching videos, playing Minecraft and shitposting on Reddit, you're likely fine.

are there no more other benefits?

If you want to hide something from your ISP, or bypass bans on servers/forums/etc. (which it's what it's used for by a lot of people), a VPN is the way to go.

Most people buy it because they're either paranoid, have confidential stuff, watch questionable content or want to get around bans (both country/ISP bans, or "i got banned from my discord server for posting 700 NSFW images").

Netflix tries to avoid that; however good quality VPNs constantly change IPs (not servers, sorry). If that doesn't work, you can always use one of the dedicated IPs which isn't shared by anyone (most of the time for an extra fee)

Not true. There are two other major benefits to the average consumer.  One is if you value your privacy at all.  Even though I'm not embarrassed by my activity, I still don't want my ISP to spy on everything I do, or to sell that data to other people.  The idea that you only need privacy if you've got something to hide needs to stop.

The second major benefit is security.  Encrypting all your traffic gives you an extra layer of security.  This is especially important if you ever use public WiFi, because other people can easily see what you're doing.  That includes any transactions you make, and accounts you log into.

@EnderDeath NordVPN is good, but PIA is the only one that's actually proven they don't log your traffic, so it's what I'd recommend.  A VPN is also a cost that you can split with other people, because lots of people can use it at the same time.  I pay annually for mine and people pay me portions for access to the account.

PIA is more expensive and I don't know the difference between the two does it really matter? and you recommend that I use one (VPN)? @JoostinOnline

It's cheaper actually.  They just don't have a 3-year plan.  Committing to that big of a plan is kind of over the top anyway, if you don't know if you're going to stick with them.Try a 1 or 2 year plan whatever you go with.

It matters in terms of privacy.  There are lots of VPN providers, and most of them promise not to log your data.  The thing is, a lot of times that's been a lie.  If you're getting a VPN to protect your right to privacy, then PIA is the only one that's proven not to do it.  They're dedicated to protecting privacy.

I recommend that everyone use a VPN if you ever make any online purchases.

I would always go for NordVPN over PIA, but they are both big players, so you should be fine with either really.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

I don't really know the difference why do you take NordVPN over PIA? @Origami Cactus

Yes, and that's compared to the $95.75 for 2 years from NordVPN.

While I would like to hear his reasons, both are good and you can see a breakdown of their benefits here: https://restoreprivacy.com/nordvpn-vs-pia/

It comes down to personal preference.  What features and pricing you value most will probably affect your decision.

I've known some people that uses TOR Browser or thinks on paying a VPN service just for being paranoid about their privacy (but still using Facebook, Google and Whatsapp, the irony!)

Some guys I know freaks out because they think that visiting Rule34, some Boorus or PornHub is soooo adventorous that they would need the TOR network and/or VPN and DuckDuckGo! ??

For me I use NordVPN because it is the only one in my region that has an app for PC, phone and TV. PIA misses the TV app.

VPN isn't a need for everyone, but as someone has already pointed out, it can add a layer of security when you're using the Internet as your activities would not be visible to your Internet provider (although visible to the VPN provider). NordVPN is one of the more popular options you have and it claims not to collect and share your data. You may see this for PIA to weigh if it is for you, but there are other options besides the two.

I went with NordVPN because I heard they're good at getting around geo restrictions for various streaming services (like Netflix) and work on a variety of devices. And of course the whole country jurisdiction thing - Nord is in Panama while PIA is in America, so to me Nord would seem like the better option for privacy even though neither of the companies have been proven to keep logs.

Nordvpn is nodoubt far better than many other vpn services in terms of features under such cheap price. When is comes to unblocking geo-restricted streaming sites, both IPVanish and NordVPN are certainly up to the challenge. There really isn’t much you can’t access from abroad with either of these services.

The one edge NordVPN has is that it can unblock more Netflix libraries than IPVanish plus providing better speed.

They aren't very transparent. Unlike some other security companies. For example LastPass has disclosed been hacked as soon as they have discovered it. Usually detailing how much they know have been compromised too.

But it's true.  If you don't want to hide anything you don't need one.   The insinuation that having something to hide equals nefarious activity does not apply to everyone.     Some people don't actually need to pay for a VPN because they are not in a position to benefit from it.

And this is the best reason for any average person to have one.

I don't trust any of them at the moment, In fact I think I trust my ISP more not to sell my data than I trust a VPN.  Especially given the nature of their wares at the moment.
