Q6600 on ddr3

Hello everybody, I have gotten a Core 2 quad q6600 from my uncle since my motherboard has socket 775, the thing is that I can't seem to find any site that says exactly what memory type the q6600 used. So I figured I would ask it on here.

My specs:

motherboardMSI x48 platinum

Memory: ddr3 (I don't know what MHz it runs on)

Cooler: cooler Master masterliquid ml360r rgb

You go with what the motherboard will accept, so look up the motherboard spec... but most likely it will be ddr3 1600mhz.

socket 775 CPUs can accept DDR2 and DDR3, it depends on the motherboard. Some boards support both types though not at the same time.

DDR3 adds no real benefit over DDR2 on LGA 775.

DDR3 1066 - 1333mhz will work.

The first Generation of Intel CPUs for consumers with an integrated memory controller were Nehalems. Youre C2Q runs with whatever memory the motherboard that supports this CPU can handle, typically that will be DDR2 für up to the X3X chipsets and DDR3 for the X4X Chipsets. But that said it makes no difference since the rather slow FSB of the C2 Processors limited the maximum usable Ram Speed noticably and DDR3 wont make a big difference, if one at all.

EDIT: and others were even faster answering ;)

your motherboard is rated for ddr3 up to 1600mhz
But there are motherboards (most) that use ddr2

And DDR2-533 would already be enough to saturate the FSB of his CPU ;) Any faster memory will only have neglibile impact on his systems speed. Timings should be more important then Bandwidth.

His motherboard supports ddr3 up to 1600mhz
who cares if it's overkill or not at this point.

Because it didn't.

At that time, only AMD had an integrated memory controller, Intel had still the Memory Controller in the Chipset.

So basically it depends on the Motherboard and what your Motherboard allows.

Either is fine.

Though today I'd look at 1333 or 1600 ones memory.

Or whatever is cheap to get.

That's a waste.

Does it even mount on the LGA775???
The mounting is different from 1366/2011 and 115x.

it has the mounting holes for it, but it's at least worth 5 times more than his cpu+mobo so i have no idea why he's getting it instead of a ryzen 3.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

I bought this cooler because of its forward compatibility with 115x and other sockets, and yes it does mount on lga 775
