It's not an "NVMe socket", it's an M-keyed M.2 slot. Depending on the key position, the M.2 slot can accept different types of hardware: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2#Form_factors_and_keying

NVMe is faster on paper. If you benchmark an NVMe drive it'll always beat SATA. However in practice, you'll almost never see an appreciable performance difference. That is, your loading times may cut by like an extra second or so.
