Z370 vs Z390 - did i make a ooof

hi all,

So i bought a MSI z370i Gaming pro carbon AC mobo and will be buying either the i7 8700k or the i7 9700k.

I got this mobo cuz it was an open box deal basically the shop had it on display but never used and got it for half the price (still working came with all the goodies etc)

MSI website says it does support 9th and 8th gen CPUs so i believe the 9700k is still compatible. The other day (2 weeks after bought the mobo) this other company had the Gigabyte Z390 I Aorus Pro and was a bit more expensive to the  brand new z370.

If the open box deal never existed and i could choose from the z370 and z390 i would of just paid a few extra bucks and got the z390 just cuz its newer. However i cannot do that and im stuck with the z370.

So my question is did i make a mistake? I dont care really care about the better wifi since i will always have my pc plugged into my 200meg fiber line :P and the z370 i got does have usb 3.1 gen 2 or what ever so im not sure what the huge difference is anyways.

help meh out ;D

The Z390 board is definitely a superior board but the Z370 one ought to work fine with a 9700k unless it has an old BIOS on it since, out of the box, Z370's didn't support gen 9 and required a BIOS flash to enable support.

If that is the case and need to update bios, and knowing my luck i would have to. Would i still be able to boot into bios without the CPU and download the bios update with my laptop and then do the flash?

From the pov of build planning i wouldn't have gone with a open box z390 board with a bad vrm, but it's only a mistake if the board doesn't do what you need it to, you won't know til you get the cpu, regarding the bios, i'd just get a 8700k if you aren't sure.
