What happened to 5k monitors?

For a while it looked like 5k monitors might be a thing, but most were discontinued and they remain much, much more expensive than 4k. Can't see any cheaper Korean ones either.

 

What happened? 5k is the ideal resolution for the 28" range, having exactly twice the pixel density of the old common format 24" 1080p. Apple uses it a lot in their 27/28" machines, but everyone else seems to have ditched it.

 

Did they not sell well or something? Not surprising given the price...

Because there isn't a market for it outside of very specific applications and, well, Macs.

Frankly, for most people, the jump up to 5120x2880 wasn't big enough to justify the massive price increase from 3840x2160 even when those were still in the high hundreds and thousands.

Apple uses them as a selling point but when have you ever looked at a Mac and said "wow look at all those pixels!" Usually it's the fine colors that are the hook for an apple display, and for non apple displays, I'll take a 4K with great color over a 5K with so-so color any day.

It's just not really convenient; usually requiring dual Displayport cables and with the general public finding the monitor to be not that much better, it just wasn't a sustainable market.

No point as 8K monitors/ TVs are a thing. Also 28 is too small small for 5K

The main benefit is that it's around 200 PPI for 28". Normal computer PPI is around 100, so it's exactly double, meaning you can use 2x scaling which looks good even in older apps.

Yeah, but 1080p goes into 2160p exactly 4x, so you can use 2x scaling for perfect scaling.

 

2880p and 1080p just don't mix well.
