Microphone to mount on Camera

Hey guys, I'm looking to get a microphone that either mounts on my camera (Canon 60D) or can be worn by the person I'm interviewing.

 

A little backstory and intended use probably helps so here it is.

I would like to record my Grandma sharing information about her life and the life of my family, my Grandpa recently passed away and we lost quite a bit of knowledge from him that was only shared via word of mouth and never written down, and that made us want to archive the information.

I don't really expect to ask questions that would be heard on camera, I was thinking more of a sitting at the dinner table just rambling type of deal.

 

What type of microphone should I be looking at? I'd like to keep it fairly inexpensive so budget is under $75 USD, I do intend to get something like the takstar sgc-598 for little projects that I want to film and have audio with (the downside to my Phantom 3 pro, I'm limited on what I can do with it because of lack of audio).

I use Vegas studio 15 platinum for my editing if that makes a difference.

Cheap lavs will have static, poor range, and sound bad compared to a cheap shotgun mic. Just make sure you are relatively close to the subject and you should be good

Cheap lavs will have static, poor range, and sound bad compared to a cheap shotgun mic. Just make sure you are relatively close to the subject and you should be good

Thanks for the link, I expect the distance from the camera to the subject will be 4' or less so it should be good, I assume the Mic being directional will reduce background noise, correct?

Yeah shotgun dampens noise from the sides and picks up from the front

Is there a place where I can learn more about these Audio setups? I've been doing some googling and searching on youtube but I still have some questions.

Particularly, if I were to get a recorder such as the Zoom H1, as well as a Microphone I assume it would have better audio than a mic on top of the camera, I've read that Canon especially has lots of Pre-amp noise.

How much more difficult would that make it in editing?

The zoom has a line out port as well as a line in port so would that allow me to run a cable between the recorder and camera? Would that improve the audio at all?

Canon usually puts pretty good preamps into their cameras, the only realy downside with the videomicro is that you can't turn down the gain, Forcing you to try and turn down the preamp in camera. So any noise that is there has to be removed with a bit of post process editing. I use mine with an olympus camera, which has a fair mediocre preamp, it dumps a lot of static into the recording. And using a bit of editing in audacity I can pretty easily remove hiss.

A dedicated recorder like the Zoom will have better audio, but then you will have to sync them up in post. Not terribly difficult, of course, but it is an extra step. plus plugging the zoom into your camera will still have the hiss from the cameras preamp show up regardless, so you'd still have to remove it should it prove bothersome.

It's not too much hassle.

Count down from 3 in view of the camera, then snap your fingers or clap.

You're basically creating a combined audio and visual cue that you can use to sync all your media in the edit.

Thanks guys, I've decided to go ahead and get the Zoom H1N recorder as well as the Rhode video micro not only for this project but also to add audio to the videos I film with my DJI P3 Pro.
