You really don't need to upgrade unless the cash is burning a serious hole in your pocket and everything else is already good. I'm talking monitor(s), I'm talking peripherals, storage, all that stuff.

Also a suggestion: buy 70,000 motivational spheres.

I’m sitting on a 1080 SC right now and have been thinking about upgrading. I just can’t seem to decide on which one. I do a bit of light streaming as well if that means anything.

Unless you are really in need of those FPS,  plan to hit 4K hard, or want all those rays traced, I recommend sticking with the 1080 for a while yet.

Hi

I think it depends on your monitor choice.

For example I have a GTX 1080 SC2.

It was good for 1440 16:9 75hz, 1440 21:9 60hz.

I used mine on a 1440 21:9 60hz monitor. I upgraded to a GTX 1080 ti and now the setup is unbalanced since the 60hz monitor can't take advantage of the extra frames.

I will be upgrading that monitor today.

I use a RTX 2080 ti for 4k 60hz but it is also good for 1440 21:9 120hz. The only reason I would need more GPU power for that monitor is for raytracing(Metro Exodus).

Not having enough power to run your monitor can be very frustrating. If there is an upgrade that can fix it go for it.

If you have the money I'd say it's worth it. I got one, and there is still some games i can't max@ 1440p 144hz. but i wouldn't get it if you are doing any less than 1440p 100hz

No need to upgrade unless your working that 1080 hard at the moment and you need more grunt to get framerates above a threshold such as 40FPS for action/RPG or 100 for eSports.

If you have the cash consider saving it for a big upgrade to a higher resolution.

I think we are all still stuck in the old habits of updating every two years or so to keep up with advancing graphics at the same resolution, 1080p... We have been gaming at that for a decade easily now and it’s still the best entry resolution!

Now we have a plethora of new and used cards that run high FPS at that resolution for even the most modern games. These games, without Ray tracing etc, are not moving forward at the same rate, in regard to graphical demands, as they used to. This is bad news for video card sellers as there is no reason to buy new. So they push higher resolution, higher FPS and extras like RTX.

So If you are good at your current resolution for your current games, with some headroom for the odd game that demands more, then save your pennies for a big leap rather than go all out on an incremental game that you will forget about in 3 months as your used to it.
