  1. 1. Which card to buy?

I'm looking to upgrade my ancient HD5850 to something new. The 2 cards I've selected are the RTX 2070 and VEGA 56, both are in the same price range  + - $15 dollars price difference. My first choice is the RTX 2070 because it's newer, but due to a major issue a lot of users are experiencing, I don't know if my 1st choice is the best choice. Should I take the risk and grab a RTX 2070 and hope for the best, that card won't have any problems in the long run or for the sake of stability and not having to deal whatever the problems those RTX cards are having, just go with the VEGA 56. Now if I took the risk and grab a RTX 2070 and somehow problems started to happened 1 month after the card was purchased, what that means is I will have to spent the shipping to send it back for a RMA, which most likely means the card I get back isn't going to be brand new.

Tbh, I actually did order a RTX 2070 and then decided to cancel my order, but as I was canceling they've already shipped it out. So when I got it, I went to return it and it cost $45 to ship it back. Spoke with the place where I got it from and they were nice to send me a prepaid label.

Basically it all comes down to this, which video cards should I get?

AMD VEGA 56: 2 years old card, but it's stable and no major problems. It does not have Ray Tracing and support for Virtual Link. It comes with 3 free games

Nvidia RTX 2070: less than a few months old, not stable, major problem. Supports Ray Tracing and Virtual Link. Only comes with 1 game. Future proof since it's newer, so it should laster much longer than VEGA 56.

Okay, but how will I know the card RTX 2070 I get is the from the "newer" batch, and what do you mean by defective memory. Are you saying the problem is caused by the onboard vram?

Well I can't guarantee you that the card you will get hasn't laid in some storage for 2 months or so :) but like I said I don't experience problems.

And yes, at least that's what I heard that the problem was caused by a defective Micron memory batch.

I see. Steve from Gamers Nexus ran a few of them RTX 2080 or 2080Ti and almost all of them started to artifacts immediately, upon booting up the system. He has a FE card that was stable, purposely remove the VRAM cooling, VRAM reached 100C and it did not artifact what or cause any problems.

yeah, the 2080(ti) did have more problems than the 2070 so I've heard. Dunno why tho.

I really want to play Resident Evil 2. I guess if I'm already spending that much on a card, might as well just spend the extra $50 to $60 dollars and get that game separately.

You can find Vega 56's cheaper than a 2070. Take this card for example. I know its open box but thats a damn good deal. The 2070 is the more powerful card, but if you can find a Vega for the right price I'd do that personally.

Yeah, I don't really see the performance drop and having to replace the card sooner worth a $60 savings. Plus the Vega card will likely be crushed in a few months when AMD releases their new stuff, making it an even worse investment.

That card is dead. Or are you talking about new Cards? That's not entirely clear...

Anyway, I'd get the VEGA 56...

Especially since the GPU is on sale on and off this month...

So you might want to look for that.

I've seen decent VEGA 56 for like 309€ and crap VEGA for 259€.

I'm talking about defective RTX cards in general. When you have like 1 or 2 reports of a card being defective, then it's just bad luck. But when you start to see many users reporting the same thing. It's something that needs to be looked deep into. I don't have a RTX 2070. I did ordered one and immediately returned it.

Yeah, I'd be wary too, especially on the nVidia side of things.

Because I have to assume malice from many parts, that just don't want to look deeper into it because that might "damage the good relations" they have with nVidia...

So it might be a good idea to avoid those cards for a while and hope that it gets solved, wich it will. But what the issue was  probably won't be known because nobody will really look into it.

But it has 8GB of VRAM vs just only 6GB. And it should last longer than the 2060 on the games I might play and resolution I would like to run at.

It really depends on what games you are going to play, because the Vega 56 performs better only in some games.

I switch from a msi 1070 gaming x to xfx vega 56 double edition a few weeks ago, the performance gain is unnoticeable in 1440p 60Hz, and wattman is sometimes challenging to use compare to afterburner.

After all, the experience has not been flawless, but I am much happier to live without a Nvidia product, even if it is a bit louder, use more electricity when overclocked, and overall not much faster.

Update

I went and got myself a RTX 2070.

Had some weird monitor connectivity issues when trying to set it up, got that problem fixed, ran some stress test and GTA V, and so far so good.

The weird monitor connectivity issued turned out to be my monitor. Some how the HDMI ports on the monitor doesn't seem to work, when connecting directly with HDMI. Using a DP to HDMI adapter and it works fine. It's not the card because my old card, was using HDMI before switch to DVI, is also doing the same thing. When testing out with another monitor (actually a HDTV), and connecting directly with HDMI, both card works, no need for the DP to HDMI adapter.

What model would the 56 be?

Generally the 56 is worse then the 2070 performance wise. It's more on par with the 2060 (after some undervolting and overclocking). If it's a decent model, you were willing to do that stuff and you wanted the 3 games it may be the better option, but generally the 2070 is the better choice when both at the same price.

That model would the strix, but I already got the 2070, so it's all good.
