Overheating 2600K, 8 Years on

Hello all,

 

I have an Intell I7 2600K Sandybridge that I have had overclocked, and cooled by a Corsair H70 AIO cooler. I removed the stock fan, and replaced it with two high pressure Scythe Kaze 120mm cooling fans in a "Push-Pull" configuration using Arctic Silver 5 as the TIM. And it has been a daily driver and am just now starting to consider building a new one and moving this machine to Server duty. However, just recently my temps have skyrocketed. There is no evidence of a leak in the AIO, all fans are working on the AIO, and the case.

 

It got so bad that the system was throttling and occasionally crashing. I had to turn the fans all the way up and it now sounds like a 747 taking off in my office and can even hear the fans out in my living room (lol). but that got the temps to around 35C @ 20% load on all cores (according to Core temp 1.13).

 

With all the fans working as expected, and verifying the radiator is clean and clear of dust, that leaves either the TIM or the AIO. I have ordered some Arctic MX-4 because that was the quickest and the cheapest thing to do (even though Arctic Silver 5 should still be ok), and if there is still a problem; I guess I will have to look at replacing the cooler. Unless anyone else has any ideas of something else it could be.

8 years for an AIO is a lot, like 80 years for a human, might be nearing it's end.

Your AIO has probably had enough liquid evaporate that it is starting to experience problems. AIOs aren't totally sealed. They are about as well sealed as a liquid cooling loop can get, but water vapor can still escape very slowly. There are probably instructions out there for cracking the loop open and refilling it, but once you break the factory seals you will likely have to refill the loop fairly regularly, on the order of once every year or so.
