Can my laptop run a minecraft server?

Hey, so while watching youtube (skeppy) i was wondering, is it possible to start a server on my laptop without paying a ton to have the server up? I’m not gonna do this for a while, I will when i build my actual computer (hopefully at tax return) so that I can play. I really only want the server to hold about 5 people (maybe 10 at most) and we are just gonna be running around in creative mode having fun and stuff

is this possible? If so, I’m gonna start researching game servers so I know what I am getting into, but I don’t wanna take the time to study it if I can’t do it with my laptop. My laptop specs are in my Signature, and my CPU has 64mb VRAM. I am not gonna have the server up 24/7, only when I am using it. Other than that, the laptop will be off (or being used to watch my twitch / YouTube chat)

It will perform poorly, especially if your internet is slow. Just get a server with a host like anvilnode.

See, I don’t wanna spend any money on it since I don’t have a job as of now (I might get their 1gb plan when I do, cause it’s so cheap and I just need a few people) and I plan to connect it directly to the internet (Ethernet) so it will be between 60-100mbps and about 10 ping (30-60 on a bad day)

I don’t have that. But running the one on google gives me 82.2mbps with a bunch of tabs open and things open in the background

edit: after closing everything, I got 97.5mbps

That's your download speed. What's important is the upload speed. Please just run a speedtest: https://www.speedtest.net/

Your internet speed is decent, but as it was mentioned above, your Laptop will perform poorly as a minecraft server.

I can help you out if you want, I have a server in a datacenter which I could host your game on. The latency will be quite bad though, since it's in a datacenter in Denmark...

in all seroiusness though, you need more cores, a quad core would really the the minium for a minecraft server, most laptops can be upgraded, look online to try and find a compatabile CPU and upgrade it, sometimes it can be done for under $30 USD

Your laptop isn't great but it should be able to run a MC server with 5-10 players. I used to host my MC server on a Pentium 4 HT 3.0GHz with 2GB RAM and it was okay for 15 players, though that was back in late 2012 and early 2013.

Well it depends on your definition of 'okay'. I highly doubt that you'd be able to run a MC-server on a machine like that these days. And you don't even have to think about using plugins in Spigot, you might as well shoot the laptop at that point...

I had about 50 bukkit plugins back then. 5 players aren't much at all so I'm sure it would run decently on his laptop.

I forgot to meantion: it will be on flatworld (one layer, grass block or sandstone) and no mobs / tile drops, no weather or day cycle. Just a 2 block flat world (if I can, I wanna set it to the old map size, but as a flat world)

i say 2 because I think (if it’s the same on PC as it is on PS4) then it makes you have a 1 block layer of unbreakable bedrock.

And we know the compatibility and power/heat reliability that the laptop can cope with? Plus what performance increase can we expect? 10%, 15%? Is that enough?

Are you sure fcbga1170 is removable?

I thought it was, I took apart a laptop a while back, I thought it was the same one

actually now that I think about it, that laptop was (I think) a Dell and I think it was a care 2 duo...,

oh oh well I don’t need a better CPU, I am looking to only upgrade my RAM and then I should be done. I should be building my actual PC around tax return

Other than that, the laptop will be off (or being used to watch my twitch / YouTube chat)

Here is the simple answer. Yes it will work. And no it will not.

Now let me elaborate why i say this. Your laptop is very weak and minecraft is very CPU/RAM hungry. While it will most likely handle 5 people just fine, it will be horrible for you to play on it at the same time. Other things to consider is how much you'll have to tweak the settings on the server to actually make it run smoothly.

I will also recomend against using laptops for any server related jobs. I've done these things myself and all of the laptops i've used has died completely. They simply arent build for these types of jobs.
