Advice: Razor Blade 15 (gtx 1060 or rtx 2060)

Hey!

 

I’m going to be selling my MacBook Pro for a VR ready laptop, so I can have a portable oculus rift set-up. I’ve looked across the market and my favourite for design is the razer blade 15.

 

So I’m looking for some advice on the models. Specifically the base model (gtx 1060, 60hz) and the advanced model (rtx 2060, 144hz) and their worth.

Additionally the (older?) gtx 1070 144hz, and if this is worth it. Not even sure what model this is! Doesn’t appear to be on the Razer website - only 1060 base model and then the advanced rtx models.

the rtx model sounds great so if its not to much more money go with that. the rtx 2060 is faster than a gtx 1070ti so it will be great for vr as well

If you're looking for VR ready, and you're willing to spend the money, I'd go with the RTX model. It's more future proof anyways.

The inner machinations of my mind are an enigma.

Like the others mentioned, if the cost difference to the rtx variant isn't extreme and you are willing to pay the higher price, that one will perform better. 

It also somewhat depends on how much battery life is important. There isn't much information yet since the rtx cards are so new, but being higher petted cards I wouldn't be surprised if the battery drain is higher.

STAY AWAY FROM THE RAZER BLADE PLEEEEEASE. They are horrible laptops riddles with problems. Their customer support is the worst too

I've returned 2 Razer Blades over the past 2 years. I had great customer service both times, although the process feels archaic compared to Amazon or Best Buy where it's all automated. You'll have to chat / call with somebody. Wait a few days for the RMA to process. Wait couple more for the return label. Wait a week for it to get back to them. Wait another week for the money to get back on your card. But you can order from them to save on tax in the short-term and get Razer Care--which I'd recommend although I don't know if it's great in actual practice. Geek Squad may be better. Or one of the plans on Amazon. Never used either of them though.

I'm intrigued by the RTX models. I had the 1070 4k model around Christmas and returned it because the screen wasn't fully laminated or something at the bottom bezel. Couldn't handle that on a $3,000 laptop. The RTX models fix some minor annoying things like lack of Windows Hello and how the function keys weren't backlit on the 1000-series. They've also thickened up the chassis a little bit for better cooling.

 

All of those things combined with adding another tier to Razer Care and continuing to grow the company make me want to keep giving them chances because they're still the only ones who cater to the things that I love / hate about Apple & Microsoft computers. They seem to be trying to listen. So I'll probably bite on the new RTX 4K knowing that I may very well return it too. Just put it on a credit card I don't care about knowing it'll be a month long process if I do return it.

 

As an anecdote, the architecture firm I work for has 12 Razer Blade Pros that we use for VR presentations and real time rendering. 2 arrived faulty. And 1 has had issues that required customer support. The others have been perfect for almost 2 years of heavy workload that they honestly weren't designed for.

 

The horror stories online are definitely out there. And I've had some meh experiences as well (hence 2 retursn). But I've also seen some pretty good results. Go into it expecting the best and hold Razer to that expectation. Run the thing hard initially and look over every nook and cranny. Push on the screen and bezels to make sure you don't hear any glue (what I experienced).

 

And if it's all fine, be excited that you can be one of the success stories from people who love their Blades. The thing is built super well, and if you've been a Macbook owner, you're going to have difficulty finding something that meets those expectations that also has a high-end GPU.

Thank you so much for the advice everyone! Definitely helps making the right decision. 


I think I may hold back a month or two and see what the battery life is like for the rtx GPUs. I'll have the thing plugged in for VR and will mostly be used for that or just general working from home / browsing and Gaming if I go round to my mates (which I can again keep it plugged into the wall for juice).

 

 

@m9x3mos & @hotdog218 & @Earnist_ - thanks, this is what I was kinda thinking, I'm happy to pay the extra but I worry about the issue with build/some malfunctions some people are getting. Maybe best to see the rtx reviews that come out later in Feb and go from there.

@GeneXiS_X I'm considering a Razer laptop because as @unclefarkus said - it's hard to find a sleek, compact, work environment style laptop with a high-end GPU. The razer laptop ticks all these boxes. I run a desktop at home with gtx 1080 + i7, and the macbook is currently used for work/browsing as I can't really game on it. The Asus/msi laptops don't really tick any of these boxes except they have a high-end GPU.



@unclefarkus cheers for that dude - a lot of great info! especially the returns process, does seem tedious! Also great to know if I do go for it - just to go over every nook and cranny and make sure I'm getting my £2100 worth! Else send it back :)

Razer has had so many problems in the past and their customer support is one of the worst. People have been denied and forced to pay for a new laptop even though it's under warranty and Razer's fault. They sometimes won't even respond. So sink $2000 into something that thermal throttles, has terrible VRMs, coil whine, keys stop working, and screen flickers. 


If  you want business go for a thinkpad or XPS 15. Both have dedicated GPUs and are powerful enough for what you want. They aren't flashy gamery and both have amazing customer support and QC.

@BuckGup - yeah you definitely have a point there! That's why I am hoping this is now in the past and this new model with the rtx is much better. (hence now giving it a bit of time for reviews to show up)

The thinkpad/XPS 15 are not worth the money in my opinion as I dislike plastic laptops (since I've been used to a macbook pro). The aluminium frame is amazing, sturdy and it looks great for the price. I was hoping for the same with the aluminium frame of the Razer Blade, and hence why it was my choice of gaming laptop.

Exactly. Aluminum gets bent and stays bent. I also agree with OP that a unibody aluminum design looks better but I would not waste $2000 for looks. Also the RTX versions are bound to run hotter and with razer I don't trust them

I believe this more to be experience than misconception. Every single plastic build I've picked up bends on the corner. If the XPS 15 or thinkpad are different, I'm open to change my mind - I'll have a look at reviews of these laptops as well. Thanks for the heads up!

And I've seen tons of people saying that they wanted aluminum/metal build laptop (which they assumed that it's studier) when asking for laptop recommedations

I've had a look and I would need at least gtx 1070 power in the GPU for VR. Thinkpads and XPS 15's are highest 1050Ti

Location is UK, budget up to ~£2200. Maybe more if required!
Weight - would prefer it thin like my macbook pro. Also a low profile so it's good for taking into work (unless cheaper and I'll just keep the macbook for work, it's real good for dev/coding/productivity).
Battery life - not too fussed, it'll mainly be used for VR and plugged in - with the occasional working from home day until I decided to get out of bed and onto my desktop ;)
