How to fix my heatsink

Mark C

I have an MSI RX 580 OC edition but when I just surf the web and my fans are on at 50 Celsius as when I'm running Battlefield 5 or other games it reaches the maximum temperature and does a force shutdown to my PC. Does anyone know what is wrong?

Thermal paste probably dried up, so heat can't leave the core and reach the heatsink easily. You can take the card apart and replace it yourself, or RMA it.

On a 580? Dried thermal paste within like two years? No way.

What case do you have with which fans? And did it start to do this recently?

That's normal, paste on my laptop is pretty dry when I got it and completely dry when I repaste 4 months later.

That case doesnt exactly have great airflow... Did you try to run it with the side panel removed?

It is actually possible, though. It really depends on the country you live in and the overall temps it usually runs on. If you live in a warm area, you game frequently/every day and you have the card overclocked. You could have dried up thermal paste and on top of that you could have close to dried up thermal pads. Now if you live in a more humid area and don't really game that much then I'd say it wouldn't be dried up.

You could try some things in the past that I had to do with a R9 390. At one point it would shut off once it reached 80c and for some reason it was simply solved by using msi afterburner and putting the power limit on -20.

Force run graphic card fan at 100% with Precision or Afterburner of your choice, see the fans spins at high speed. A bad VBIOS setting can also lead to fan running at low speed at high temp, this is usually happen by OEM's "This is a quiet GPU! Buy this!" slogan and this is the aftereffect you get. But let's not rule out bad air ventilation from the case and poor GPU surface contact with heatsink.

Also dried paste don't ALWAYS mean bad or heat up to extreme temp. It's the new paste that need cure time that heat GPU more than dried paste, also i did not over applied.

So the problem was the case, I might just have to get a new one. Could you recommend me a good one with great or good airflow?

Sorry, I wouldn't be able to. I don't know much about cases. Maybe you could make a list of your requirements and open a topic in the "cases and powersupplies" section of the forums?

Use CPUID HWmonitor and MSI afterburner to keep an eye on your temps, and see how they're behaving... Do you have access to a 2nd monitor, have those running on one screen whilst you play... I'd also recommend CPUID CPU-Z and on the bench tab, give the CPU a stress test and monitor temps.

Until you can determine the exact cause of the issue, you could end up going in circles trying to find a solution.

Perhaps it could be resolved with better positioning of case fans, or the addition of more fans, cable management can even help with airflow.  What case is it and how many fans?  If they're stock fans that came with a budget case... replacing those with better performing ones could be a good start.

Just for the heck of it, wipe clean the paste off HSF and CPU and use Arctic Silver 5.  Don't put too little or too much.  You can wear a glove put some in the middle and spread it out with your finger.  Then let us know what happens.
