He spends $240 on a GPU  but $140 on a cheapass CPU.

-snip-

OBVIOUSLY there will be a bottleneck! 660 SLI and a Titan have almost the same performance. You're telling me that you will get an i3 with a Titan? No, because it's will obviously bottleneck!

that's going to bottleneck..

like 6 to 8 out of 10 times it's going to bottleneck a game depending on if it's GPU/CPU bound

normal you spend more on a gpu than a gpu if your just gaming

it's going to bottleneck

i don't think i need to elaborate here

Error: 410

Okay, stop there.

The first issue here is that the GTX 660 costs $190.

The second one being that the "cheap ass" CPU is quite powerful. Also, it's $130.

More games take advantage of GPU power over CPU power, so it would be logical to get a powerful GPU. The i3 4130 is still a good CPU, and can in fact hold it's ground against an Athlon II X4 750K at stock speeds.

Basically, what I am trying to say here is, don't open your mouth until after you have done some research.

It will definitely bottleneck, but it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Maybe he should buy an i5 before he gets another 660.

Oh yeah because a dual core is amazing for gaming, especially for this newest generation of games.

Now you see, you're basing your criticisms on idiotic superstition. That's not the way to go about it.

Remember, while it may be a dual core, it:

1. Has hyperthreading. It won't improve performance as much as real cores, but will still help performance a bit.

2. Has vastly superior single core performance as compared to the 750K. Some games will take advantage of the stronger cores.

A dual core will do fine but you will reach limitation and the rule of thumb usually is buy a cheap cpu that can manage well and spend the rest on the gpu

Nobody cares about hyperthreading, some people even reported that hyperthreading reduces performance in some games.

I found this http://www.overclock.net/t/671977/hyperthreading-in-games

most games are not optimized for it

So then, I guess the part about the stronger cores went right over your head?

tell your friend he should sell the i3, because it is bad ( had one, no overclocking means bad ) tell him to buy a decent CPU, he will get the boost just by doing that... i3 is a NO for a good GPU
