Duel DDR3 or Single DDR4

So my friend has one DDR4 8GB stick of RAM

He is upgrading his mobo and want to know if he should get dual channel DDR3 or stay with single Channel DDR4

it depends on the motherboard, you can't fit DDR3 into a DDR4 mobo and vice versa.

Chances are your friend isn't gonna go for an older processor, so maybe just get another dimm for dual DDR4 and call it a day?

that's because it has both DDR3 and DDR4 slots, which isn't all that common.

Then it depends on the CPU. Some CPUs support DDR3 and some DDR4. Which CPU do you have?

He has an i7 6700 and is deciding if he should buy a mobo for the one stick of DDR4 RAM or two DDR3 sticks his friend gave him

He should sell the DDR3 online and buy DDR4 with it.

Skylake uses DDR3L though which is lower voltage, you can try lowering the voltage manually of common DDR3 to match it but that often causes system instability, either ways you're not looking at an ideal solution.

it's been around even during lga 775, had a DDR2/3 combo board in the family rig after it was sent for RMA. no using them together though.
