Thinking out loud here. It seems companies are missing out on a huge market share here!

Maybe I'm missing something, but I cannot for the life of me find any laptops that meet the following description:

17" screen

Relatively low power

Huge honkin battery

All day-ish battery life.

 

Any reason why? Especially with the current Windows 10 on ARM push from Qualcomm, wouldn't that be the perfect college student laptop? You get the big screen for light multitasking (90% of college work right there), and you don't need to lug around a charger. I've personally been searching for a device as I described for a while, and have come up dry? Has it gone under my nose, does it even exist? Or hell, is there any realistic demand for a device as I describe? I could see it used in business and education especially.

What you essentially want is a macbook air but with a 17" screen.

 

The problem is that large screens require lots of battery, hence why most "low power, high battery life" laptops are small 13" models. 

 

Also, if you make a laptop big enough fort a 17" screen, people are going to want better specs to go along with it.

a 17" for school is in my opinion a terrible idea. i tried that for a while and i didn't enjoy it. at all. it's so impractical.

Maybe im just weird in that regard. I had no issue with the weight of my old Elitebook until it was the only thing in my bag, and that was a 10 pound 15" laptop. The extra screen real estate of a 17" is a godsend for me, but that could just be me.

i've got an EliteBook too, but it's a litlle 14" 9470M, and i love the portability of the thing. it's so light i can comfortably hold it with one arm. ideal for showing a teacher something if i'm having issues... trying to do that with my 17" MSI gaming laptop was insanely dumb.

I have an 8460P with the BB09 undercradle battery, 9 or 10 pounds. And, the laptop I described would probably be pretty thin and therefor light.

Im thinking in the class of 8-ish hours or more

Weight isn't a first priority, neither is budget. Im really just curious if this exists

I will be watching that closely... I wonder what Linus' view of it will be, considering how much he loves the gram. Thank you for bringing that to my attention, I missed it!

As a former college student. You dont want to lug around a 17" notebook. Also, with a big ass battery comes weight. Also, Windows 10 on ARM is relativity a new concept and who knows if it will ever catch on. Even with emulation, they cant guarantee that all the software will work well. 

 

People want small devices with lots of battery power. So 17" doesn't really fit in to that. Also, if you want a lower powered machine like that, Id suggest looking at Chromebooks, they have about all day battery life. I think at minimum most Chromebooks have 10 hours if not more.

HP Envy 17 FHD

 

Not sure can last 8 hrs or not due to powerful hardware, 7 hrs is possible:

HP Omen 17t customize / 17-an110nr - 8750H+1050/1050TI, 82Wh battery no GSYNC

Issue with the chromebook is the tiny screen. I've also used them and hate the OS in its entirety. I think the solution to my question is the LG Gram 17", hope it's as good as it sounds!
