Upgrading CPU/Motherboard, could I get a little help

PeterM3

I currently have:

2x8Gb DDR4
GTX1060 3Gb
I5-6600K
MSI H110M

mixture of 2/2 SSD/HDD

I am looking to upgrade to an I7-7700k CPU and I don't know what type of motherboard I should be looking for, I understand the basic "hierarchy" of GPU's and CPU's but not motherboards. Could someone tell me if I am wasting my money or what I should be getting, i'm looking for something not too over kill

You can use the motherboard you currently have, but you will not be able to overclock the CPU. The K at the end of the name means you can overclock, but you have to have the correct motherboard. If you don't want to buy a new motherboard, see if you can save a couple bucks by going with an i7-7700. If you do want to buy a new motherboard, then you want to look for a Z170 or Z270 motherboard. Either of these will support an i7-7700K and will allow overclocking (you will need a decent CPU cooler though).

My Build, v2.1 --- CPU: i7-8700K @ 5.2GHz/1.288v || MoBo: Asus ROG STRIX Z390-E Gaming || RAM: 4x4GB G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 2666 14-14-14-33 || Cooler: Custom Loop || GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 Ti SC Black, on water || PSU: EVGA G2 850W || Case: Corsair 450D || SSD: 850 Evo 250GB, Intel 660p 2TB || Storage: WD Blue 2TB || G502 & Glorious PCGR Fully Custom 80% Keyboard || MX34VQ, PG278Q, PB278Q

The Experiment --- CPU: i5-3570K @ 4.0 GHz || MoBo: Asus P8Z77-V LK || RAM: 16GB Corsair 1600 4x4 || Cooler: CM Hyper 212 Evo || GPUs: Asus GTX 750 Ti, || PSU: Corsair TX750M Gold || Case: Thermaltake Core G21 TG || SSD: 840 Pro 128GB || HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB

R.I.P. Asus X99-A motherboard, April 2016 - October 2018, may you rest in peace. 5820K, if I ever buy you a new board, it'll be a good one.

Welcome to the forums!

If you have a H110 you don't need a new motherboard, just perform a Bios update and you are good to go. Although you cannot overclock on a H110 motherboard so if you plan to OC you need a Z170 or Z270 motherboard. Which are now hard to find since they are no longer manufactured. If you don't plan to OC which makes sense since you haven't before then look at the i7-7700 instead. There probably is decent used deals now since it's 2 gens old.

Don't bother with a processor upgrade. Get a new GPU.

Either put an i7 7700 non k version into your current motherboard after a bios update or go with an 8th gen or 9th gen cpu as the 7th gen are just bad values at this point unless you get a killer deal used.

This is a fair point. The 1060 3gb is probably going to be the limiting factor in the vast majority of cases.

Thanks for the input, I will keep an eye out for price drops in the GPUs

What is your total budget for this round of upgrades?

It's not a bad card. You just won't see a benfit of upgrading the cpu in this case until they upgrade their graphics card a decent amount.

About $350 is my budget atm, if I upgrade my GPU I would upgrade into a 1070/1080 meaning I will have to save for a bit longer or find a good deal, I don't want to buy used, personally I don't trust them. I am looking to casually upgrade atm.

Anything used is always a risk, it just is a matter of how high. You can look into refurbished stuff too.
