1440p 165Hz and 4K 60Hz Gaming - What card?

chiller15

My GTX 1070 has failed and I'm receiving a full refund, so now I'm on the lookout for a replacement card. I play games mainly on a 24" 1440p 165Hz G-Sync monitor, though may rarely connect to a basic 4K TV. The types of games I generally play are RPG, FPS and racing sims. Don't really do online based games.

Any recommendations for that can comfortably meet my requirements and likely do so for the next ~5 years?

Edit: Forgot to mention budget...doh! I have about £600 to spend, so a RTX 2080 is out of the question. My guesses are either a 1080 Ti or a RTX 1070. (I care not for ray tracing, as first gen technology usually sucks anyway)

Stop and think a second, something is more than nothing.

For 1440p 166Hz and/or 4K 60Hz gaming, you'll need at least a GTX 1080, but a 1080 Ti or RTX 2080 would be more desirable (especially since you want to keep this card for the next ~5 years).

At what quality and which games?  You can get by with a 1080 Ti/2080 if you turn down settings, but don't expect to be maxing them out to achieve high frame rates.  Even the 2080 Ti struggles to get 60fps @4k in some current games.

Thanks for the input so far. Looks like 1080 Ti cards are difficult to get hold of or really expensive at the moment!

a used one from ebay would be your best bet since they are not made anymore

That's what I'm gathering, though I've always had a large mistrust of buying electronics from eBay, even after all these years. :( Plus there are barely any on the UK eBay store

Would a RTX 2070 handle 1440p at 165Hz? Or 4K at 30fps?

how much can the RTX 2070 achieve on 1440p?

i recently purchased one and i am planning to change my monitor to 1440p@144Hz. if that would be good for the card, or the card can survive up to 100 fps on med/high settings for the next couple of years.

for competitive games i think it will be fine but my question for AAA games.

If new is the only option, 1080ti if you can get one in that price range.  Need the strongest card you can get to enjoy FPS games. Especially at 1440.

So I've managed to get hold of a refurbished GTX 1080 Ti from a respectable seller on eBay. I have heard of a lot of fake cards from eBay, so how can I check whether it is legit once it arrives?

As Princess Cadence said. For me even the 1080ti was not enough to push that FPS at 1440p in many titles, therefore, planning an upgrade

Even the 2080 Ti on max settings has a hard time pushing 1440p at 144hz.  The 1080 Ti below in 100hz in a lot of games.  I believe Witcher 3 was around 80-90, but it's been awhile so my memory is fuzzy.

i had no issues recently. 1080ti for my misses build, around £600 mark from amazon.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/GIGABYTE-AORUS-1080-Xtreme-11Gb/dp/B06XWY767M/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1543880922&sr=8-12&keywords=1080ti

okay i back track my first comment ... holy crap it went up nearly £200 in 2 month ..... ouch

Okay so a 2080 is cheaper then a 1080ti at the moment in the UK

https://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-RTX-2080-GAMING-TRIO/dp/B07GQZ3DYL/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1543880995&sr=8-1&keywords=2080

id say go fro 2080 and just ignore the RTX until its actually worth using.
