Stay the fuck away from department stores, like don't even bother with them.

Go to a real local bike store.

Well yeah I was asking for specific brands and models. Like Fixed Frame, Trek, Norco

Fixed Frame

Never heard of that brand. Your best bang for the buck is in buying a used bicycle about 4 years old from anyone of the name brand manufacturers. Trek, Giant, Rocky Mountain, Specialized, Gary Fisher, GT, Jamis, KHS, Kona, Santa Cruz, 9 zero 7.

What I have noticed in the Fat Bike arena is the full suspension Fat Bikes are not as plentiful as their counterparts, I dont know why that is because riding the terrain Fat Bikes are meant for, you'd think they would make full suspension Fat Bikes more abundant. It does save the bum and nut sack a lot of soreness.

I'd only be interested in the right suspension combo front and rear, because everything else can easily be upgraded for a reasonable price. Next would be looking at your derailers and shifters, cranks are expensive too.

Of course these brands all seem decent to me because there are no garbage brands like NEXT or Surly, Super Cycle, CCM, Schwinn on there.

Fat bikes need a lot less suspension because their tire provides a lot of suspension. Whats the best depends on the riding you are doing, city riding in nice weather? find a rigid frame with lots of attachment points for bags and such and semi slick tires. for real winter riding in snow and ice, probably still rigid (suspension can get squeeky) but look for tires with big knobs and attachment points for ice studs like trek's Gnarwal tires. Are you riding single track? Get a mountain bike.

Also ride as many different kinds as you can, each person has different body dimensions and different frames may feel better just because of that.

Things to look for in the 1k-1.4k range, Hydraulic disc brakes, at least 2x10 though 1x11 or 1x12 would be better. If you get one with a suspension fork (Not necessarily a bad thing) make sure it is a good quality fork.

You don't need suspension on a fat bike. That's what the tires are for.

I think you're going to have a hard time finding a decent fat bike for the price you want it for. Decent fat bikes are generally in the range of $2000+.

What are you intending to do with it? You may be better suited with a 29+ or a 27.5+. Unless you are absolutely sure you're going to be doing LOTS of snow and LOTS of sand riding, fat bikes aren't really that fun to ride unless you get a really nice one. (They're heavy, bulky, turn weird, and expensive to maintain.)

What? Surly as a garbage brand? You realize that surly and salsa were both QBP brands.... (meaning they were essentially the same frames.) right? They may be a tiny bit heavy but they sure as hell aren't bad frames. 90% of the touring people I've come across have surly bikes. Including people who have ridden the divide and the length of Argentina.

I used to work in a bike shop and many of the employees buy surly frames as their commuter bikes.

Well if Surly are cheaper, it would explain why you've seen so many ?

Yup

Department stores sell them, they are garbage!

The people who put the bikes together in the department stores are whom ever is around at the time. Crap components, crappy fitment of components, just crap!

Watch BikeMan4U and you will see, or any of the countless video's of shitty bikes put together by employees of department stores. The people who buy those bikes, wont be spinning no wrench or screw driver or allen key plus they will think that grinding in the bearing is normal, or the looseness of the headset is alright, or the plastic pedal not even tight is ok, or the wobble in the wheels isn't that much, or or or or or or or or

As for finding the right bike, it all depends. I prefer fat bikes with suspension, others dont. Buying a bike to what you will mostly ride: is it a commuter, in and out of traffic, sidewalk princess, downhill, cross country, trekking, flat, hilly, bumpy, jumping over logs and rocks, single track, snow, mud, ice, sand, warm weather, cold weather, windy, big jumps, dropping off ledges, tricks, skate park ramps, height and weight of rider, female or male, is the color of the bike important, what components do you want do you want XTR-Di2 or Tourney, how many speeds, single front, dual front or triple front, how many gears in the back, 7, 8, 9 ,10 ,11 12, dropper post, hydraulic or cable, disc or V, how wide of a tire do you want for what you will be riding, on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on.

In the computer world, it is like someone posting a question on ltt that they want a laptop for $500 and no other information is given.

The fat tires can only soak up so much, they wont be able to soak up more then they can handle.

Where on earth are you buying surly at department stores? I have never once seen surly at a department store.
