After 2 weeks with NH-U12S on i7 8700K. No Complains No Regrets!

Earlier I posted some topics about CPU cooler choice for replacing my FSP Windale 4 to cool i7 8700K in a bad PC case. It was 49C idle, 71C gaming with Turbo enabled.

That time I was thinking to get 120mm AIO recommendation, but people here said that it's not worth the upgrade.

After that I tried to get some recommendation for good air cooler instead but not the huge ones in mind.

Someone brought me with SRS, NH-U12S, and even NH-U14S on his list. I take my call for NH-U12S, I purchased it. Just after I made the deal, I found about Thermalright Le Grand Macho RT which I thought it's the better cooling solution than NH-U12S I just purchased, because I assumed that Grand Macho can fit in my case without being too heavy. At that time I was deeply regret my decision.

 

I tried to stay with NH-U12S instead with deep regret inside my bones. I run the U12S on my turbo enabled i7 8700K. It sparked my curiosity to try something further.

I put NF-F12 iPPC 3000 PWM fan to replace the U12S stock fan, OC the 8700K to 4.9 GHz on 1.272v VCore, and GTX 1060 6Gb to 2.15 GHz. Run my favorite game World of Tanks in 1080p fully ultra setting. The temp is only 56C all day long, real smooth 110-125fps eye candy.. Now I must left my regret away..

 

No Complains No Regrets NH-U12S!

 

But I still wondering how can I safely OC 8700K to 5GHz with this little charm and what can I get from the extra clock speed.

Someone advice please..

how? Pascal cards are limited to 1.09v Vcore

No! I put my stock fan to my front panel, I'm newbie in custom PC build. Also I don't use AC in my house. but I'm ordering TG Kryonaut indeed.

Maybe World of Tanks is not so demanding to stretch 8700K

not really, but it is bugging me out. Motherboard's BIOS cannot control dedicated GPU's voltage, so you either changed the CPU core voltage, or integrated GPU voltage.

 

If you use Afterburner for dGPU overclocking, you need to enable voltage monitoring and control in the settings menu

Post screenshot of some performance monitor software, like HWmonitor or Afterburner etc. Run heavy benchmarks for several hours to test for max temps and stability. If you are still scared, set CPU shutdown temp from 105C to 90C in BIOS. But after you do stress tests. CPU might shoot for 90C+ under stressing if your cooling isn't enough for voltages.

Asus RealBench is good one for CPU testing. From stress tests my favorite is OCCT (from techtubers Jayz and OC3D use it). 3DMark can do also, but imo RealBench is better.

Sorry, it was the DRAM, my bad.. No more debating on this, I admitted I was wrong to mention it was not the GPU VCore but DRAM.. LOL, how can I did this?

I'll download it, but which is the last version of RealBench? How about Prime95

 

I have tried to go 5 GHz with 1.3v, but I didn't bencmark it, just run with load. Temp is only 58C but it crashed.. I bring it back to 4.9 GHz with 1.275v, and it stabilized there.. Why could this happen? Was it my motherboard which can't handle it? It is MSI Z370 PC Pro

It could be that volts aren't enough. But could also be that mobo can't keep voltages, while 1.3V isn't that high. I don't OC so much that I could say which is more issue. I'm guessing its voltage.

Is it safe to go more than 1.3v? How high is voltage to be recognize as high and concerning?

That differs between CPU generations and AMD/Intel. For yours 1.3V is considered max for daily use, 1.35V only if you really need it and 1.4V max you should even try. Over that you get very little for the heat it generates. Overall when OCing you should be thinking what is the actual performance gain you need and can achieve. For testing you can always go further than what you eventually end up using. But if you chip can't do 5GHz on 1.3V, it might not do it with 1.35V either.

what does bother me is the motherboard. That VRM doesnt look strong and it could run exceedingly hot.

That differs between CPU generations and AMD/Intel. For yours 1.3V is considered max for daily use, 1.35V only if you really need it and 1.4V max you should even try. Over that you get very little for the heat it generates. Overall when OCing you should be thinking what is the actual performance gain you need and can achieve. For testing you can always go further than what you eventually end up using. But if you chip can't do 5GHz on 1.3V, it might not do it with 1.35V either.

Why RealBench shows my RAM speed is 1333 MHz but actually I enabled the XMP and it run it on 2666 MHz via BIOS???

because DDR = double data rate, sending data twice per clock cycle. data rate is 2666MHz, but I/O itself runs at 1333

I did 2nd benchmark without make any changes, still with same state and done it with this,

avg CPU temp is 64-67C

I just reapplied the thermal paste on the CPU from NT-H1 which come with the cooler to the TG Kryonaut today.

That would be unstable OC :D RealBench is really good as unlike other stress tests/benchmarks, it simulates real world scenarios. So that test would mean that you are gonna crash while encoding some video editing project. Temps are still good, so its just tweaking with volts to find balance.

So I raised the volts to 1.290v VCore still with 4.9 GHz, and DRAM 1.3v

my NH-U12S with iPPC 3000 PWM hits 3014 rpm when holds the max temps,
