Sound Card Struggles

Go to solution Solved by an actual squirrel,

To enable the amp on the zx, you have to go to the speaker/ headphone tab and select headphones. Do that if you haven't already. I imagine they are going to sound really muddy if you haven't done that.

I don't know if i'm just bad at tuning a sound card or need an actual amp, but i can't quite make my soundblaster zx not sound either flat or muddy with my Senheiser HD 558's.. am i just bad at tuning or do i need a dedicated amp?

I know mobo audio is comparable to a soundcard rendering them useless but the cheap dac on my $60 ivy lake asus p8b75m sounded quiet, crunchy and depressing, the $20 used Sound Blaster zx isn't as bad so don't roast me, it was $20

onboard sound is only at acceptable levels from like Z87 and up lol, everything older has been kind of trash from my experience(though the 775 board i used to have for the first LAN PC was actiually OK). im on a Soundblaster Z and have a pair of 558s, i just pluged them in and left everything defult and they sound pretty good to me, but i am by no means an audiophile.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

They sound extremely tinny to me, almost painful to listen to for more than an hour.. i try to turn up bass and mids in eq but just make them sound worse.. i've heard my HD 558's on someone else's V20 at my school and know full well what they can do. it's sad that i can't get that effect again.

It's just a bad sound card. If you want a good cheap DAC/Amp go with the Fulla 2 for $100. Or if you want to spend a little less ($65) the FX Audio DAC X6.

I have absolutely no idea why i didn't mess with that before, 5.1 surround sounded like trash.
