R9 390x Nitro trouble... Plz help!!!!

I have a Sapphire R9 390x nitro.... And I kinda like it considering I gave $75 for it. Runs great outta the box with no issues. But I like to overclock... Heard you could do half way decent with this card so I took a shot on it... And here's where I need help... It will not OC at all... Period. I can't even change the fan curve without the card locking up at idle speed. Which then I have to completely uninstall all the drivers and reinstall them to get it functioning properly... Someone help lol I have no clue wat the issue is...

if you paid 75$ for a 390 that locks up at idle speeds , then congrats you have a clapped out mining gpu.

I had a 290 that was a previous miner and it had to be underclocked at all times to it's lowest settings to be stable during 2d desktop usage and could only run at stock clocks while gaming with the fan locked at 75%.

The thing is... The card had never been used... I broke the seal on the anti static bag myself....

That's why I'm completely at a loss... It's practically brand new (aside from manufacturing date) the card had never been opened or anything

those cards aren't packaged in sealed bags , usually an open ended bag with just a sticker closing it.

75 bucks for a "new" card? Sounds very fishy. Seems like whoever sold you the card tried really hard to mislead you.

It's possible he/she resealed it. It's usually not that hard to remove the seal without any damage.

 

edit: take a picture of the bag and the seal if you can.

What software are you using to set the custom fan curve.

$75 for a "brand new" R9-390X seems a bit fishy, though.

I'll get a pick if I can... Hopefully I didn't trash it. But I used ddu and everything. I tried different OC software from afterburner to trixx and everything in between... Same result every time. Just doesn't make sense why I can't make a single adjustment on the card

And I trust the gentleman I got it from very much. As he owns his own business and has been a personal friend for several years... That's how I know the card is new... And definitely why I got the good deal on it.

I had an MSI Twin Frozr 390x that sucked balls. I had to +20mv or something like that to even be stable at stock. I RMA'd it and just sold the new one before I opened it due to the poor taste in my mouth. Maybe its a 390(x) thing idk. Anyways how about a different system or a different PSU>?

Tried it on my workstation (x79) with a 1200w psu and still has same outcome... So maybe just a shit 390x...

I had bad luck with mine and I cant say I would ever recommend one to anyone. If thats the case it may very well be a dud. Talk to the guy you got it from, seeing as youve known him for a while you may be able to get your money back in exchange for the dead 390x idk

Ya I could. But hell I paid $75 for a gpu that runs ultra settings stock lol. Might as well keep it and use it til my 1080ti gets here... But I was hoping someone on here had the same issue and could give me an idea of just what's going on.

Could just be a "bad" card ... years ago I had 2 identical Asus HD7770, one of them would only take 50Mhz on the core and memory while the other one would OC a LOT more (can't remember the exact numbers). It sucks but it happens.

what I'm getting at is this.

A card should essentially never lock up at stock speeds. Heck it should essentially never lock up. But a key sign that there's a hardware related issue rather than software is usually in those hard locks vs something like performance problems. 

Given that you most likely tried a slightly newer or older driver versions already and have tried reinstalling and trying a few different programs to adjust fan speeds or overclock settings , you can then narrow down to being a hardware issue , the last software related fix I can think of might be a bios change or update or mod. there are a few bios option that reduce the voltage in an effort to regain stability on cards that have either been fried by mining or have manufacturing defects. I'd suggest trying one of those

Thanks for the input... I've heard of custom bios flashes... Don't seem difficult, but would I be safe to try it considering the card has a dual bios? Essentially it would just derp the bios I was trying to flash at the time and I could safely switch to the other one to revert it correct?
