In a bit more detail: What single upgrade made the biggest difference to your PC experience? For me, it was the leap from an Nvidia 7300 LE to a GTX 750 Ti!

HD 7770 to RX 480.

Holy shit. 240 euro's for a reference model (had to order the damn thing from germany) and i can do the 4GB -> 8GB flash bios mod on it (only going to do that once the warranty runs out)

it's not that it's hardware locked, in many models it simply isn't there, but in some it's locked by the firmware.

There's a story behind it tho.

Back when the RX 480 was launched, every reference card was exactly the same and came with 8GB, the first batch of 4GB cards were actually 8GB cards with a different BIOS that only made 4GB of the 8GB available. And because the cards are exactly the same and an official 8GB bios exist, there are no issues because it's all legit.

 

Of course after the first batch was sold out the 4GB cards came with 4GB, not 8GB so the trick wasn't possible anymore. The 8GB ram needs to be there physically on the card of course if you want to use it :P

 

Also, funny note, the boxes of the RX 480 4GB cards were actually RX 480 8GB boxes with a sticker with "4GB" on it to cover the 8GB.

I really don't know, each upgrade had a special thing to it. I got my 6700k to replace my old i3-6100 because I liked to record/render videos Replaced my 750Ti for my R9 290 for games like GTA V and to get more consistent frames in Rocket League, Minecraft and to run these easier to run games at higher settings. I then sold the R9 290 for $270 because of mining and I plan on getting a GTX 1080 but picked up an R7 360 in the mean time. I got my SSDs to not only improve overall windows performance but to have a dedicated drive for games. And I got 16GBs of RAM for modded Minecraft and the small amount of editing/photoshop I do.

Not one of these overpowers the others. So, Eveything?

Local IT guy upgraded my failing S3 Savage 3D to S3 Savage 4 that also failed within a week and then gave up and ungraded me (with no extra charge)
to a more expensive nVidia Vanta card with 16 MB of memory. Finally could play Half-Life at 1024x768 and 40-60fps :)

 

Upgrading from Barton 2500+ to an Intel D805 - reasonable jump in performance but also proud back then that i could afford buying everything using money made all by myself doing freelance programming. Not depending on parents for help and all that.

 

Less excited but was happy with the purchase nevertheless ... going from nVidia Vanta to a Radeon 9200 which finally died last year in my parents' pc after some power fluctuations in the building.

 

Barely excited about going from a Radeon 7770 Ghz edition to a RX 470 ... you just don't get those big jumps in graphics quality and performance anymore... ffs I could still play most games with my 7770 ghz ed. card even though it had only 1 GB of memory.
