DHCP Through Server and Router

Go to solution Solved by tt2468,

You cannot have 2 DHCP servers on the same network. That is why guest networks exist.

OK so I'm setting up Spiceworks for our network and I logged into our router to set up some static IP's and realized that DHCP is disabled...

I have DHCP set up on our main server but I feel like this is creating a security breach since any phone that is connected to our network is connected to the domain.

I would like to have the Server handle the DHCP for our computers on the network that are part of our domain and the router to handle anything else that's outside of the domain.

Anyone have any input on this matter?

Its not a security hole, it doesnt' have access to the domain.

This just easily lets the domain know who has what ip and makes things like smb multichannel much easier.

OK so I can leave it the way it is. Perfect! That just saved me a huge headache I think. Lol

Thanks for your help!

NEVER run 2 DHCP servers on the main network.

Someone at my office enabled a second DHCP server and i spend hours resolving it- well that and out cisco phone system died and was essentially dosing the entire network.

O.o Well that sounds like the exact nightmare I was hoping to avoid today... Lol

Have seen this problem most commonly when someone adds another router to the network to act as an AP, and not turned off DHCP... it'snot good :D

Well luckily I haven't added another router to the network. Just the second server but that's not running DHCP. :)

Oh, no I didn't mean to imply you had, sorry if that was the way you took that. I just meant I have seen this quite often when someone is setting up their new network devices onto their "old" network, namely a second router acting as a switch and wifi AP, which is OK it works, but they don't know that they should turn off DHCP on that second router, and even worse sometimes the second router is also set to have the same IP address as the main router... as you can imagine the network implodes, and they have so many problems. It's pretty much the first thing I ask in that situation, if they have added any networking gear lately.

Just to clarify, I am not a network guy, and don't claim to be -  and for any advanced stuff I would most likely go "eh?", but can usually figure out most usual home network problems easily enough through my own trial and error efforts in the past usually :D

Lol no I understood. It's cool. I'm right there with you but I'm sure trying to figure this Server Administration thing out. I think I'm doing pretty well so far. Thanks for the input though!
