I love how hard drive capacities have been exploding to the point where it's realistic (if still expensive) to get an external 10TB hard drive.  Remember when your best shot at that was a Drobo or rackmount array?

Cool to see these kinds of things coming to market.  But they seem a bit expensive.  Assuming the 96TB is just 12x 8TB HDDs, even at $300 per drive, that's only $3,600 for the drives.  Adding an extra $1,500 for the case and controller parts, that still only comes out to ~$5k.  Not sure where the 2x cost comes from.

do they come with the drives or without? 700 bucks for just the enclosure seems awfully steep to me, or can it be accessed by multiple users at once trough thunderbolt or something?

It's kinda like a Bentley. People that buy these don't give a rip about how overpriced they may or may not be. $7,200 for rear seat tablet entertainment? Sure! $700 for a smoker's package? AIGHT MY DUDE!

Can someone explain to me why they use HGST drives? Does WD own them? Are they actually better than WD drives? What's the deal?
