Computer as GPU?

chase_gibson04

Hi I was just wondering if it was possible to build a high end pc and then use it like a video card for another and why we haven't done it yet.

I don't quite get your question. If you have a high end system, just take the GPU of that system and put it in the other...

I'm asking why you cant build a computer with a high end proccesser, ram and then hook it up via pcie to another pc

But could you have the cpu dedicate everything to graphics? And maybe even just put a GPU in the diy GPU?

well you can with stuff like ifiniband, just no use to do so on the deskop. On linux you can do opencl over the network, which is simmilar. Also vdi

ok ok ok what about a cpu, lots of ram and like 2 gpus and you have multiple infinibands going tinto multiple pcie.

Btw this is completely theoretical.

It's called cluster computing. Video render farms have not moved to using gpu as the cost and amount of available ram is not competitive with non gpu systems
