BMW will bring Holographic controls to CES 2017

Guest

Holograms are often used in science fiction due to the sheer potential the technology expresses to the users. Companies have recently shown that they're looking towards a future that is making our fantasies reality.

BMW teased the technology's presence in the vehicle that they will showcase to the world at CES 2017

BMW HoloActive Touch controls will turn heads at CES 2017

Like its Heads-up Display, it uses smoke and mirrors, actually just mirrors, to project a full color display. Unlike that HUD, however, the image really does seem to float in the interior of the vehicle instead of being projected onto the windshield.

The company has had some attempts at renewing and introducing features to vehicles and many of them include displays that can be utilized by the driver which makes holographic touch controls next on their list

That might make for fancy visuals, but the system doesn’t stop there. There are cameras that keep an eye on the driver’s hands, fingers to be exact, and determines if a finger has made contact with one of the virtual control pads. If it does, a pulse is generated and the appropriate action is taken. BMW doesn’t detail which actions and controls will be available, but it does hint that some of its BMW Connected services will be floating in the air.

It will definitely be a step towards the future of the automobile and shows that there is something more than the touchscreens that currently end up in almost all the devices that are currently coming out of the factories. I am curious as to how soon this technology may arrive though I am not yet sure whether it will push through at all then again they do call them concept cars.

BMW isn't saying when the HoloActive Touch could be integrated into its car lines. But it did cite the concepts from CES' past that it evolved from, like the gesture control at the 2015 show that is now available in both the BMW 7 series and 5 series and the AirTouch that debuted at last year's.

This looks like a fancy touch screen, and touch screens in cars are horrible as you have to take your eyes off the road. Voice controls are the way forward for cars IMO.

cool but what car innovations will BMW bring? Cause car-puters are just soo ahead of the curve and exciting.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

earning it back-
