Thinking of buying a console

Ddave

I'm thinking of buying a PS4 (maybe PS4 pro) just to play RDR and The last of us. Now that RDR2 and The last of us 2 are official, the "urge" to buy one is getting stronger.

Thing is, it also feels like a waste if those are the only games I'd play. What other console exclusives would you recommend ? Also, are there physical copies of PS4 games, or do I have to download those somewhere (like steam) ?

CPU: Intel i5-4590 | Motherboard: Asus H97M-E | GPU: Sapphire Nitro R9 390 | RAM: 2x4Gb Kingston HyperX Fury Black | SSD: Sandisk Plus 240Gb HDD: Seagate 250Gb  | PSU: Seasonic G650 80+ Gold | Case: NZXT S340

I am who I am.

The Uncharted series is great, also God of War. The PS4 Killzone wasn't as good as the older ones.

There are physical copies, but games still install 20-60gb on the console and still require the disk to play. Almost better off just downloading.

Are you in it mostly for The Last of Us 2? If so, I'd just wait. Isn't there a newer PS console coming out in the next year or so?

Correct. At least that's the way it is with the Xbox. Put in the Halo 5 disc, had to download 90+GB.

Is there ? I might check out the details then. I'm just a bit hyped up with the recent announcements. :D

Haha, I thought so too, but iirc it just went straight to downloading the file. Took a damn long time even on my 50mbps connection. What's the point of having a disc if you have to download so much anyway.

I'm not sure, I just assume since Microsoft is releasing Scorpio. The Last of Us doesn't come out until 2018, so still loads of time ;)

You insert the disc and it loads data from the disc to the console, so that doesnt require internet. Then the games usually have a large downloadable patch as well.

Uncharted's older games were released on ps4 as a collection. God of war and Killzone are only the newest ones.

Games don't run directly off the disk. They have to install onto the hard drive. However, the system will let you play once the game installs a minimum amount.

If the game has a patch, it'll download that, but you can still play the game without patching it first.

I'm more annoyed that I see literal disc cases with labels that say, no disc included, just code. Why the hell have a case then.

I've always hated that the most. Way to create huge amounts of unnecessary waste guys.

At that point it should just be on a piece of paper behind the counter.

Check out this site:

http://gematsu.com/exclusives/ps4

Then click on each one of the words (Platform, Console, etc) to remove those kinds of titles from the list... leaving only "Full."  It'll show you a comprehensive list.  That makes it easy for you to browse and make good decisions.

Edit // I went ahead and collapsed the list.  Here's what I'd recommend based on personal experience. These are just the retail games that are currently released (not counting PSN downloads, and announced games):

I like physical copies of games, they retain some resell value and playing them on someone else's console is straightforward.

There's no new PlayStation coming next year, that would be ridiculous. Pro was the step up. It's Microsoft's Scorpio that's coming out next year.

Once you have the console, you'll probably find yourself picking up games from various continuous and plentiful sales, so don't worry about it. You'll also likely be compelled to get a PS+ membership, which will give you around 3-4 new games a month free of charge. Your PS library will be cluttered just like a typical Steam library in no time! :P Just go for it!

You can get the first three Uncharted games in the Uncharted Nathan Drake Collection, as they're 60 fps remasters of the PS3 games. Then Uncharted 4 is a native PS4 game. The only God of War on PS4 right now is God of War 3, which is a 60 fps remaster of the PS3 game. There is a new God of War coming out Christmas 2017 or maybe in 2018 that looks unbelievable.

You can play the first two God of War games on the PCSX2 emulator. You easily have the PC to be able to run them well from the specs you posted, and they're both amazing beat'em up games.

Red Dead Redemption 1 isn't available on PS4. You'll have to get an XBox 360, XBox One, or PS3 for that. I think you can stream the PS3 version through Playstation Now through either your PC or a PS4, but people I know who have used the streaming service say it's not great.

Horizon Zero Dawn is a great looking exclusive coming out at the end of February.

Days Gone looks like it's going to be pretty amazing. It's rumored for a 2017 release.

If it's for RDR and RDR 2, just buy a used PS3 for RDR and buy RDR 2 on PC.  You'll need the PS3 for RDR anyway (or XBOX 360), because PlayStation Now is a depressingly reduced experience that often fails to load.  And don't worry...it's coming on PC.  At this point, it's practically the same thing any way.

I have been a dedicated console gamer from NES through launch PS4, and finally made the jump to build a gaming PC after I bought a 55" 4K TV and found out the PS4 NEO (at the time) wasn't going to render natively at 3840x2160...and I just can't go back.  Can't.  Impossible.  Tried.  Can't.

Granted, it cost me 3x as much $$$ to get here, but if you get a new console it's just that much less $$$ available to get to The Promised Land.

Just so you know RDR is available on the Xbone, and it runs better than the last gen ps3/ xbox 360 version. Mind you the Xbone version uses the exact same assets but performance-wise it's better

RDR is also available on PS Now but the service is really terrible IMO
