is the i7 990x still a good CPU in 2016?

Hi so i recently built a very cheap second hand PC and i was thinking about upgrading the GPU on it to either a RX 480 or a 1060. well my CPU is a Xeon X5660 that i overclocked to 3.73GHz (could go higher but the PSU will hold me back)

so theoretically my cpu right now is essentailly an i7 990x/Xeon X5690. so would a 990x hold back a 1060 or RX 480? thanks if it does then i think ill have to stick with the GTX 760 in my system currently

It's a good chip, but something in the last couple gens will run circles around it.

but will it "bottleneck" the RX 480 or GTX 1060? like i know pairing a GTX 760 with a core 2 quad.but will a 990x significantly hold back a RX 480 or 1060?

It'll have a slight bottleneck most likely but nothing like for example pairing it with a core 2 quad.

If OCed a RX 480 bottleneck would probably be minimal

No bottleneck. I ran i7 970 6 core with RX 480 and CPU at 4.4ghz no problem.

Yes... It will bottleneck in the sense that a CPU upgrade would unlock a large deal of better performance.  Even if you assume each generation of CPU only increased performance by 5% clock for clock, you are talking about roughly 30% now.

ok so i will lose so potential power but will it be as bad as say a core 2 quad?

It won't be as bad as C2Q, but you'll be 20-30% behind someone with the same card and a recent gen processor.

In games that use all 6 core and 12 threads it won't be any slower than a 6700k but in games that use only 4 threads it may loose a few fps but it will depend on the framerates most at 60fps you'll be fine but if your aiming for 120 or 144 you might see a bigger difference.

im only going to be doing 1080p gaming at 60 FPS. since i have a 60 hertz monitor. 

i play as of now BF4, Fallout 4, and minecraft. i plan to play GTA V, Witcher 3, BF1, and perhaps other AAA games.

yeah i dont plan on upgrading my monitor any time soon either. im fine with 1080p 60hz

It will be about the same performance of a new i5 with 4 threads of usage, and will crush an i5 once you start going over 4 threads of usage, it will probabbly be more like a 6700 if not better once those threads are used.

I know this thread is a few days old but ill way in my two cents lol. I myself have i7 990x with 12gb of ddr3 and a gtx 1070 and when benchmarked against my cousins system with an I7-5930k when it came to gaming and let me restate "GAMING" only there was no noticeable difference in gaming performance and watching my gpu usage it sat at 100% all times. Upgrade your video card and enjoy your system for awhile to come. If there is a bottleneck its so small you cant see it with your eyes while playing.

I have a 990x overclocked to 4.8. I really have no reason to upgrade,

 

Regarding bottlenecks, I play pc games and notice none.

 

Server-side restrictions actually slow me down (Star Citezin, Arma3)

When overclocking make sure you have 1600Mhz or 1866Mhz RAM if possible and you won't have to worry much about a CPU bottleneck. It will be adequate just like a new i3 or Pentium with HT is.
