Australia's technological future under the newly elected government...

HutchisonSorbo

abbott.getty.jpg

By the looks of the latest polls the Australian public has decided to elect a new government, with Tony Abbott becoming the new face of Australian politics. I think it's fair to say that both candidates were pretty lousy, but I would have preferred Rudd if only for a few reasons. Australia will now lose the NBN (National Broadband Network) as Tony Abbott and his party believe that 25Mb/s is fast enough for Australians (Not to mention that this speed won't be available until 2016!  :angry:).  Australia was already lagging behind,  the 'Australia tax' making the purchase of anything in Australia that has to be imported incredibly expensive. Obviously this is a rant, Australia will continue to  lag behind the rest of the world in terms of broadband speed for many years in seems. Canada is looking rather inviting at the moment @LinusTech  <_<. Any Australians wanting to share their thoughts feel free, even if you're not from Australia... Would you be happy if these new policies were being introduced in your country?

Nah, they're not doing the internet filter anymore. They're only encouraging and providing parents with software to block inappropriate sites. Only upset about the NBN though ... it's not cost effective to do FTTN. FTTP would've been so much better for us for like the next 100 years. Copper's gonna be shitty in like 10 more years ... and the cost to replace it will be a waste as it could've gone into fibre optic.

This is a sad day for Australian technology. I have three more things to say;

1. I want to bitch slap Tony Abott for his statement about 25Mb/s and it costing $2500 to connect

2. I will likely have to move overseas to study

3. Calling up and asking for my filter to be removed so that I can watch porn is going to be kinda awkward...

Thanks for the update, I'll remove the part about the filter now.

"The Coalition will deliver fast, affordable and reliable broadband years sooner than labor. Our aim is that everyone in the nation should have access to broadband with download data rates of between 25 and 100 megabits per second by 2016, and between 50 and 100 megabits per second by the end of 2019 in 90 per cent of the fixed line footprint – although it should be noted this goal in part depends on NBN Co delivering its current satellite and fixed wireless solutions on time and on budget."

I could live with 25Mb/s too currently... It would be amazing, but not 3 years... I'm currently lucky to get above 2Mb/s down on anything, and my old house was less then half the speed of that and I was only 20 minutes from the city!  :(

I think I am going to steal an Asylum seeker boat from the shores and go float over to America or Canada, but the internet really for me I have for as long as I have known our internet speed (4 years ago-ish) have been living with 300kbp/s connection and 25 Mbp's is a big jump but it is lagging sooooooooooooooooo, far behind any other first world country and it really pisses me off that the Australian government doesn't understand today's technological needs.
