Much better than a $2500 connection fee for internet that is already slower than the rest of the world

yup. this is a slap in the face for people renting too.

People who own their homes can usually afford to foot the bill. but those who don't are pretty much fucked. the exchange is literally next door.  and I get 1MB down when I'm lucky!

Nah, they're not doing the internet filter anymore. They're only encouraging and providing parents with software to block inappropriate sites. Only upset about the NBN though ... it's not cost effective to do FTTN. FTTP would've been so much better for us for like the next 100 years. Copper's gonna be shitty in like 10 more years ... and the cost to replace it will be a waste as it could've gone into fibre optic.

not even in 10 years its already bad now and way behind the rest of the wordl now just imagine in few more years how laggy its going to be then.

This is a sad day for Australian technology. I have three more things to say;

1. I want to bitch slap Tony Abott for his statement about 25Mb/s and it costing $2500 to connect

2. I will likely have to move overseas to study

3. Calling up and asking for my filter to be removed so that I can watch porn is going to be kinda awkward...

woah so there implementing the same thing that they're doing in the uk? correct me if im wrong and provide any more details that you know of?

Yeah, I know. I just meant like even worse as it'll just degrade to the point of being non-functional. At least it'll be faster than our current internet connections. But FTTP would've been more future proof. Yeah, it'd be really expensive at the moment but we'd benefit so much from it and it'll last for long.

yeah i agree but of course abbott "seems to know better" but oh well in a few years he will realise that todays economy is all about the internet and without the internet the country suffers badly.

$2500/$5000 is a false claim. It's free to connect to the node. The extra connection fee is if you want fibre directly to your home.

"The $5000 figure is the top range of what people in Britain are paying to upgrade from fibre-to-the-node (Coalition's network) to fibre-to-the-home (Labor's network). And while it's technically true that "connection" to Labor's NBN is free, users have to sign up to a paid contract when they join the network."

I'm still for Labor's NBN though.

This something that Abbott has taken back. Originally they were going to filter out any website that had any sort of adult/illegal content. But this is no longer the case

Anyone who uses the policy presented by the liberal party has to pay $2500 to have their home connected just so they can get speeds that are slow compared to much of the rest of the world.

I also bet that no one realises who they've just elected as prime minister. Labor WOULD NOT be much better but anything is better than having Abbott as PM. Even another Liberal party member just not Abbott

Liberal party, at it's core, supports large businesses. People who work and support large businesses tend to agree more with the policies presented by the Liberal party. Not just old people

I just checked and the thread was just updated; They are not implementing the filter however they will be providing families with the software and resources to do so. I'm worried that this will be a reason to give me "The Talk"....

If you're coming to Canada for faster internet speeds or a less lousy government, now is not the best time.
