I'm helping a friend build a PC and I was wondering if there are any recommendations for a good gaming motherboard pairing with the i5-4960k?

Also check out mATX boards. Might look funky in case, but no sense paying for pcie lanes you don't need.

MSI Z97 Gaming 5 is a good choice. MSI Z97 SLI Krait if you're on a tighter budget. 

Will these overclock around the same? I went for the Krait because of the color scheme.

i5 4590 @ Stock, XFX R9 290!, HyperX Beast 4x8GB  @1600, 850 EVO 120gb, WD Caviar Blue 1TB, , Asrock H97m Pro 4 , Fractal Design Define R4, Windows 10

They should be similar, though the Gaming 5 may be able to get more out of the CPU if you're really pushing it. 

 

I think they have the same amount of power delivery phases, but I'm not sure if they actually use the same quality components.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I heard almost all Z97s overclock the same, but I guess there are differences in VRMS and such. Though the Krait could just be marked down because of it's color and because it's not their "Gaming" brand motherboard.
