Get a R9 290X now and wait for Pascal (2016) ?

LarsReviews

That 970 is going back. Coil whine + that memory issue + getting a new ASUS R9 290X for 330 Euros are enought arguments. Or are they?

What do you guys think? Another option would be a new Asus 980 for 560 Euros, but I am running a 1080p display.

Edit: a used 780 is also a option.

Definitely go with an R9 290X if you want a card now. I'd probs wait until R9 3XX. GTX 980 is wayyyy too OP for 1080p

I would go with a Vapor-X card vs a Asus DCUII card for the R9 290x.

Wait for the 3xx cards.

You do you dislike amd cards?

No I am fine with AMD now. I got over my AMD depression.

Wait for the 3XX series. It will probably cause a price drop somewhere.

If you can't, then the 290 is fine for 1080p. No need for the X.

Agree about the overkillness. I need to give the 970 back till Feb. 14th and waiting for the 300 series to come out would be too long. Also I don't know how much they will cost, because I only want to spend a max of 400 Euros.

The memory issue isn't really an issue, I don't see why there is such a ball ache about it. OK NVIDIA should have been upfront from the start about it but lets be honest, 3.5GB is still a decent amount. My GTX 780's have 3GB and they're perfectly fine.

Very logical choice mate. The 980 is the best and the 290x is still a beast and priced well in your area. Choice is yours.

Either wait for the new AMD gpus, or get one of those 230$ R9 290Xs :) no point is paying one as much as you would a 970, price to performance is the 290x's biggest advantage atm.

Forgot to mention that a used 780. Maybe a 780ti if I find a really cheap one. But spending as low as possible would be nice too.

Well, going for a 780 doesn't really solve your vram problem though :) and performance will be similar or even worse. At that point might as well hold on to you money for a couple of months and see what amd brings to the table.

please don't buy an Asus DCUii 290/x unless you are water cooling it or have no intentions of overclocking. Take it from someone that already made the mistake.

I am astonished that people have actually returned GTX 970's purely because of the memory thing.

I know, and the sad part is he has likely never had the issue, but decided to complain anyway because why not.

Nvidia should have been up front with it, that is for sure, but this has gotten way too much attention as most people that own this card will have to run DSR to get even close to hitting 3.5 GB of memory usage on their GPU.

I would say that the lies and coil whine is plenty enuff to warrant a return. The Vram Gate is just the deal sealer.

If you don't enjoy the coil whine of the GTX 970, you won't enjoy the generally loud nature of AMD's R9 290(X) cards.

You can find the GTX 780 for $250-300, which is a straight downgrade, but is cheaper and comes with the same sexy reference cooler.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

TIL every 290x is loud.

The aftermarket 290s are not loud at all. The Vapor X is more quite than the 780ti and most any other high end card.

I was being sarcastic xD

Dont mind me.

I know the myth that every 290x is loud and a space heater is wrong.

The MSI 290x is good also.

They all dump a lot of heat; the heat coming off the GPU has to go somewhere, as there is no way to create cold. But yeah, cards like the Tri-X R9 290/290x are both cool and quiet. They're quieter under load than many 970s.

Can you even find a 4GB Vapor-X now? I figured they were discontinued and Sapphire only used that cooler on the 8GB model now, as the only Vapor-X R9 290x newegg carries is the 8GB version.
