What type of PC do i need for a home cinema setup?

Country: United Kingdom

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Viewing 8k 24-30fps footage 

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): 

 

We are converting one of our old storage rooms into a cinema and I want to know what type of PC we need to play this back. I think an intel i5 7th gen and a high end GPU is good, but not sure though.

If it is for playing movies and shows (and not for gaming) then a high-end GPU is not required. A CPU integrated GPU will perform no differently. For instance, my HTPC (Blackbox in my sig) runs on a Core i7 6700 and it's integrated Intel HD 530 graphics. It has no problem what-so-ever outputting to our 4k TV and matching the TV refresh rate with the frame rate of the Film/Show for smooth playback using Kodi.

Didn't see this. You'll need a GPU with HDMI 2.1 support for that IIRC.

does your tv have a hdmi 2.1 or DP 1.3/1.4?

If you want 8K output nothing you can buy today will do. Wait for the new GPUs.

Yes, unfortunately this appears to be the case. No GPUs that I know of (and a cursory search confirms) have HDMI 2.1 support atm.

They do, but not through HDMI

Over DisplayPort yes, but I'm not aware of 8K TVs with DP input.

Honestly I would wait for the technology to catch up. You can get an Amazon firestick 4k for $50 or splurge on an Nvidia shield for $180. I would wait to build a pc until there is actual content in 8k and displays become more readily available.

 

Asrock is making a successor to the deskmini a300 that will support ryzen 4000 series APUs. They are the size of a PSU. That will probably do the job

I was wondering if these would support HDMI 2.1. If so, that sounds like a nearly perfect HTPC to me. Zero moving parts would be perfect imo.

Well the current gen a300 says 4k @ 60hz so I assume so. The 4000 series should for sure but op wants 8k.
