How much does a computer slow down when it’s out of RAM? 🤔

I’m building my brother a new PC after his broke from a sketchy power supply and I only have 8GB of DDR4 2400 MHz RAM to spare but I’m wondering how much this will slow down the PC if he’s gaming and needs more than 8GB of RAM? The other components are pretty solid though with a 1070 Ti and an FX 8320 8 core @ 4 GHz CPU (my spare parts) so I’m just curious about the RAM. Will it slow down a lot? Or will the slowdown be noticeable but minor?

Thanks!

Oh damn you’re right I didn’t think about that. I was only looking at if the parts I had for him were compatible with each other but I didn’t consider the motherboard. When I had those parts I was using DDR3 1600 MHz so I might have to buy him some DDR3 RAM instead.

I've recently (almost) run out of RAM and despite an SSD the machine pretty much stopped when it started to swap like crazy. I had a hard time even closing the program that was causing the issue.

The FX8320 is an absolute piece of shit when compared to ANYTHING that came out in the past 4 to 8 years that is not a pileofshit steamroller bulldozer exavater whatever shit core amd used for years before ryzen...all of those are trash even an i5-3400 is better...and it will bottleneck the living shit out of a 1070ti...

That shit cpu couldnt provide a steady 60FPS gaming experience 8 years ago when i had one running at 4.93ghz ffs lol (check the cinibench R15 sheet its in there somewhere.)

do not spend a penny on that...pretent you don't have that shit board and CPU.

Save money, etc. no bueno FXo

It may not be great but I am using spare parts only and can’t afford to buy him a new CPU. I have an FX 8320 on hand from an old build of mine. I can only work with what I have. He can always upgrade it later. 🤷🏻‍♂️

You won't be bottlenecked by 8GB of RAM. Virtually any game runs fine on 8.

You will be bottlenecked by that dinosaur CPU that wasn't particularly good when it came out.

It will hold that 1070 Ti back so hard you'd think you were playing on a GTX 660

You're strapped for cash but you just have a 1070 ti in your spare parts?

Lmao sell your spare parts... Build him a 3300x + Rx 5700 xt computer. At least it'll perform well. An FX 8320 is going to turn a 1070 ti in to a 1030... at best.

I had my 1070 Ti in my own build before I got a 2080 Ti. I didn’t go out and buy it though.
