Would you choose a 1080p 240hz TN panel or a 1440p 144hz VA panel?

dimi3ja

Hi guys, first time posting here! Glad to finally join you, and as most people, my first post will be a question.

I am coming from a 1440p 60hz monitor (Dell U2515H, sold it already) which is not ideal for gaming, and would like to get something better. The thing is, I don't think I would fully utilize a 1440p 144hz monitor (my choice currently Samsung c27jg50 4ms, same panel as Viotek GN27DB or the AOC CQ27G1), I am not sure if my GPU is good enough (gtx 980ti, i7 4790K 4.6ghz and 16gb ram). My other choice for around the same price is Alienware AW2418HF which is 1080p BUT 240hz 1ms and apparently has very nice colors (freesync only, but I don't really care). I don't have the budget for a 144hz+ IPS, so my choices are TN or VA.

I mainly play Apex (PUBG and CS:GO sometimes) from multiplayer games, single player RPGs (Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Borderlands etc). I also use my monitors as a primary source for watching movies, tv shows and youtube. I do not have amazon or bestbuy or newegg available, so my choices are limited in terms of brands.

Any advice?

Yes of course, the panel itself is more alive

1440p 144hz all the way. The resolution is worth so much more than the extra refresh rate. I doubt you would notice the difference tbh.

Since you asked, between the two, I would go with the TN because it's 1080 which is the same as my TV. Most people will not have that reason.

Why is the TV resolution important for making decisions about a PC monitor, they are used for different things?

Regardless of either, you would need to push high frames. Depends how much you actually care for resolution and panel type too. Still for the specs it will be hard to take full advantage of them. You can always upgrade eventually though.

Personally I would avoid that Samsung one, I don't like curved monitors nor VA too. There are beter options also. It's more prone to ghosting in fast paces games as well. So if you mainly play online fps games then I take it also higher res and better color is not a priority. So maybe get AW one or some 1440p 144Hz IPS monitor.

My advice would be decide based on measurable performance. Thoroughly tested reviews are the only way to go.

Subjective opinions, 1st hand or not, and 'overview' reviews of spec sheets, are not very helpful.

The below link is a sorted list by 'quality gaming' of all of rtings reviewed monitors.

Other sites you can view, though they have a poor / non existent filter/search tool, are

On youtube 'hardware unboxed' also do relatively good review vids with most the relevant test information, however being that they are videos and they dont have a website, they are only really useful if u know a specific model ur looking for info on.

Actually, they can both be used for the same things. I clone monitor screens via HDMI splitters to my TV for watching movies, etc., and matching resolutions makes cloning a lot easier. My TV is a  43", the largest that will fit where I need it to fit and is plenty large for my viewing needs. Also, I did not want a "smart" TV. I had one heck of a time finding my present "dumb" TV a couple of years ago.

Thank you for your input, I have already read everything there is to read, and watched all of the videos, I am just very indecisive as a person. As you can see, the samaung one is actually not bad at all for a VA panel https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/samsung/jg50

I have used TN and IPS panels, but never VA, that's why I wanted to ask for help online.

Not acceptable for professional players, but for me, not that bad. I also use my monitors as a primary source for watching movies, tv shows and youtube.

Still VA is holding it back, it's more like a 120Hz monitor per say. The Acer one holds up better to it self.
