Easy to use nas solution

Hi, iam a 2nd year computer science student and i need a lot of storage for projects and stuff. Well, around 2tb, i don't know if that's a lot or not. Until now for each of my different projects, i use several external hard drives. Now, you can guess what happens next. Correct, i dropped one and it broke. Luckily, the firm i sent it to could recover the data but at a pretty high cost. Now, iam a lucky guy with some parents willing to pay for the bill of a good nas. Now, at home my parents have a wd nas for media and stuff but sometimes in the middle of the night, it wakes up and starts making noise although it should be in some kind of sleep mode. For them that's not a problem because the nas is in the basement but i only have a small room and i need some sleep at night. Does anyone know of a nas that has some kind of programmable sleep schedule? The price should be beneath 300€ for a 2bay nas with 2x 3-4tb drives in raid 1.

Buy an external harddrive NAS/RAID solution and just buy software that backs up the data every once in a while, this is what I do. I have 4x 8TB hard drives in RAID 10 using this:

And to back-up my files I use:

I would recommend a 2-Bay Synology or QNAP (they make very similar units, and the OS/Interface is extremely similar - find whichever one is the best deal that still has the features and hardware specs you need).

With a 2-bay Syn/QNAP, you likely won't need a sleep schedule at all - they're incredibly quiet. You might hear the HDD if you're right up against it, and it's a particularly loud HDD - but both should be able to have some kind of sleep schedule if you really needed it (They support CRON jobs, and are built on linux, so you can do a lot).

Hmm.. computer science student... building a NAS out of an old junk PC is kind of a PITA that most people avoid, but in your case might actually be helpful because it would cause you to dig into how UNIXy software works.  Less trouble for you than the average bear.  Upside is you would get something built to your use you would have total control over.  One of those  extra curricular things that might look good on a resume.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Build your own nas do some research and pick up some hardware to build one it's much cheaper usually. Pat regan and Brian moses have blogs about building nas's. It's a pretty good resource for hardware. As for software I like freenas it has lots of convenient features.
