Faster than a rocket - Lexar demonstrates 6GB/s SSD and 1.75GB/s Memory card + 5G NAS

Transfer speed in storage memory is all the rage.  The faster data can be moved the quicker a media job can be completed, or the more can be completed in a shorter time.  Lexar demonstrated this first hand with their prototype Gen 4×4 NVMe SSD which was running at over 6GB/s for the demonstration.

Lexar is very excited about this SSD and hopes to see a 2020 Q2 release, believing that it can achieve 7GB/s read performance as they have already achieved that in prototype testing.

The Crystal Diskmark result was flat out impressive.  This SSD supports the NVMe 1.4 protocol, features LDPC and will feature SSD Dashboard software management… but let’s not ask about specifics as to the controller just yet.  All that we can state at this time is that it is a 12nm SSD controller and it isn’t from any of the big name manufacturers and it isn’t a Marvell product.  The key question here might just be whether this controller will ever be seen outside of a Lexar product.

Apologies for the poor quality of this shot but IOMeter has shown that this SSD will break the 7GB/s threshold.  They believe specs will be 7GB/s read and 4GB/s write, availability will be seen in 512GB. 1 and 2TB sizes, and that installed memory will be 96 layer 3D TLC flash.

This shot shows the system demonstration with a rather interesting shot of the technology park progress in the background. 

Other than that, they've also showed a card reader based 5G NAS, a rare sight in the world of wired blocky HDD bays.

Lastly, they've also featured a Compact flash card whose speed could match mid range NVMe SSDs:

Thoughts: It seems like for the immediate future, SSDs will need to have blower fans to cool themselves like that of x570 motherboards. The 5G NAS seems like a hassle but I can see some applications such as in the outdoors where there won't be wi-fi signals, and that card could really help with a lot of 8K video issues a lot of youtubers have begin to face.

Good to see SSDs eventually reaching speeds making PCIe 4.0 have any value in consumer space, but even that is a stretch. Not sure I'd agree about the cooling part. We don't know if they can manage it in other ways, for example, more efficient process combined with adequate heatsink on the controller chip. At least I'd hope it'll be no worse than what we have today.

Would love to know the TBW for that NVME drive.

 

Anyway, looking good for Lexar being the first to showcase the blistering speeds of that drive. I think the 5G NAS is a very niche market, but who knows? could be useful at conventions maybe for booth owners to have a hotspot you can connect to or some other usage.

Aren't all the previous 7GB/s SSDs all on PCIe slot rather than M.2?

I mean I've seen faster than rocket in the title so. This is a bit more increase in sequential speeds, still same old random read. As we capped ~4GB on older gen with new ~8GB next year for sure.

I just want to see what Samsung brings.

Lexar used to always be on the edge. I remember their Lightning USB drives. Insane speeds. I still have it. It's only 4GB, but it's stupid fast for USB 2.0. Weren't they bought by Sandisk some time ago?
