Anyone have any opinions on which new spec of MacBook to get? i currently run all adobe apps for film school. (mostly premier and after effects) and i need help deciding between 16bg of ram vs 32gb. and also 5500m with 8gb or 4gb. Is it worth the extra money for either of the upgrades?

If you're only running the adobe suite just get a far cheaper windows machine with an i5 9300h + 1660ti for ~$1000-1400?

The RAM on the mac is soldered isn't it? 8GBs is better in general, but I don't know what the price increase to get it is.

Not the answer to his question, in any way. You also recommended a 4 core, lower clocked, hyperthreaded CPU over a 6 or 8 core one for Adobe suite, which love high core count and clock speed...

8GB > 16GB? For video editing, using Adobe suite? Also, the 16" MBP he's after is 16GB base.

 

Answer to OP:

 

Not sure how much money you have to spend, but when it comes to RAM more is better. Though, I don't see 16GB being uncomfortable on macOS for quite some time, seeing that Catalina only gets tight for RAM with 4GB. As for the GPU, if you have the $100 to spend for the VRAM upgrade it is worth it. You also probably won't miss it.

 

With that being said, optimal config (imo) is the 6 core CPU, 16GB RAM, Radeon Pro 5500M 4GB, 512GB SSD. Upgrade from those specs as you see fit in priority of VRAM > CPU > Storage > RAM.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

Still not the answer to his question. Besides, even the overall shoddy ports of Adobe suite apps to macOS run better than windows.
