I can get my MacBook Refurbished for free

I've got a 2016 13" MacBook Pro without a TouchBar. The 2016 MacBook Pros are by far the least reliable Macs that Apple has released.....however the consumers haven't been abandoned. 

 

Apple has announced 3 separate service programs for my machine. I qualify for a Display, keyboard, and battery replacement. All for free! This essentially replaces everything but the internals of my machine. Meaning I'm essentially getting a free refurbishment. 

 

You could say that Apple should never have designed such a "lemon" of a laptop, and you would be right. However, I think you must also commend them for reaching into their pocket (at significant cost to themselves) to make the customer happy. Considering that I'm on summer break, I might just have to go into my local Apple Store and drop my machine off to get serviced. 

 

What do you think about Apple and their history of repairing their products when things go wrong? Especially when compared to other brands?

My opinion is that a more prudent approach to initial design and testing would lead them to producing more thoughtfully designed products which would have greater longevity for the consumer, especially given the high initial price point and supposed superiority of their product.

 

 

but naahhh they're just gonna keep pounding out stuff that looks good from the outside and has good sounding specs but made in the poorest possible ways to keep costs down and profits high because they know most Mac/Apple consumers will come back once they're in the eco-system.

Yes. Definitely. But being able to admit your mistakes is important for the consumer. 

 

There shouldn't have been those mistakes. But at least they will fix them.

there are only 2 times where my macs have actually failed, not as a result of an accident.

 

1) MacBook Pro 13” late 2011

- Hard drive crashed.

 

2) MacBook Pro 15” 2016 (wTB)

- Stagelight issue

 

other than that, I’ve had two other macs which worked just fine, and I’ve only replaced the model when it was not feasible to fix it.

 

even my supposedly terrible 2018 i9 mode runs like a dream, and I’ve never experienced throttling etc. 

 

Sometimes they might not realise a part is under warranty, such as before I had a key fall off my 2016 model, but they soon realised they were wrong. Apple even has a standard 3 year warranty now, so if I had my 2016 MacBook, I really could get it refurbished for free (and I did, and they gave me a new 2018 model, which I gave to my sister, and because I already claimed insurance got a better 2018 model).

I think that Apple should start acknowledging that it's a lot more than just a "small number" of users that have issues and stop putting data lines right beside a power line without any ground pins in between.

I've had very mixed results as somebody within the ecosystem as a user and servicer of apple products. I commend Apple for repairing whats broken, but I wish they would cut it with their "A small number of users" BS.

 

Apple is a very different company now than it was when Steve Jobs was alive, but I would say nothing is heading in the wrong direction. If I could change one thing, I say bring back the polycarb Macbooks!

When Dell puts out shit laptops for 300$, no one is surprised, it's 300$.

When Lenovo puts out laptops with built-in spyware, few are surprised, they are chinese and known for this.

When HP puts out shit for hardware, again, no one is surprised, after all, HP does stand for Has Problems, or Hardly Perfect, or Horse Pucky.

 

But when Apple puts out shit hardware for prime price tags (some would say stratospheric prices) intelligent people should rightly excoriate them for it, the fanbois find excuses.

That whole situation is the strangest thing. I haven’t heard anyone complain about it recently and I have one of the only models actually covered by a repair program for it.....yet I haven’t seen any signs of trouble.

My partner has a stack of MacBook Pro's going back several generations, all but her current one have issues.

One has bad fans that were replaced, replaced, replaced, and out of warranty sorry. It sounded like a coffee grinder a room over whenever the fans spun up. They also replaced the screen 3 times. And the speakers twice. That's when the fan issues started so I'm fairly confident that someone bent something and something was rubbing the fans.

One has an issue that it just suddenly blue screens. Not like an error screen but the whole screen just turns blue and the system hangs until you force power off or the batter dies. Doing nothing, browsing internet, video editing, doesn't matter what you're doing. No Applestore could never duplicate it and all were unwilling to help even with the extended applecare warranty on it. This one was the most frustrating because it was likely some hardware component failing at random but because no one was willing to do anything it meant that nothing could get done for it. Even when she walked 12 blocks to an Apple store with the blue screen on to show them so they could document it and start the needed 'forms' to get some hardware replaced under applecare, they couldn't do anything.

One has become old and can no longer run the needed version of OSX to do anything productive anymore, which is supremely frustrating because the hardware isn't incapable but the whole machine has been deemed incapable because of the OSX version.

The most current one has been the most trouble free but was also the most expensive, and seems like the most likely to survive. I've cleaned the heat sink and fans out once already and will probably re-past the CPU/GPU at some point in the future.

All were top spec when bought.

 

It's one thing when hardware has problems due to poor design, but it's an entirely more frustrating thing when there's such a lack of support, lack of acknowledgment, and lack of expertise when each time $2,000 or more has been doled out for the hardware and software.

I purchased the machine in early 2017 mind you. 

I purchased mine 7th jan 2017, so not far off, but if it really is just cable stretch, you should be more fine with the 13” model.
