gpu upgrade I am looking at upgrading my gpu (gts 450) to a gtx 1050ti but am afraid of bottlenecking

My friend wants to sell me his old gpu (gtx 1050ti) with a pc case but i am afraid that my system will bottleneck the gpu because of how old it is. Any help?

 

I have a late 2010 i7 with 8gb of ddr3 and some late 2010 motherboard, and i think it’s a prebuilt Dell Vostro (said 420 but it is probably different because it has an i7 from around the same time).

I have i7 920 and I have gtx970 and it works like a charm, overclock it and it will be even better

Dell Vostro 420 is Core2 Duo/Quad based.

 

Does your PC have a i7-9xx or i7-8xx series CPU? Both should be just fine for a GTX 1050 Ti.

it depends on what games you want to play, newer games, such as monster hunter world will be unplayable but most older games (2016 and older) eg rise of the tomb raider will be no problem, neither will any esports games, eg cs:go and fortnite

 

edit: make sure either your old case has room for a 1050ti or your motherboard has standard front headers (the pins that connect the case power button to the motherboard),

I don’t know what it is, all i know is that it’s an i7 from 2010-2011.

it might be a different vostro then but it’s definitely from the same time though.

What does it cost?
How much more is an RX570??

 

I'd rather get the RX570 instead because its just soo much faster.

It comes with a new case and the board has the right connector.

Also i’m not getting an AMD card. Even if it’s faster it will still probably bottleneck at the same point.

Dude that's freaking expensive.

A new case is like 70€ or so in decent form and they come with up to 3 Fans (though cheapish ones).

That means you pay like 130€ for the Card.

 

A new, way better RX570 is like 140€.

If you download CPU-Z, it will tell you what CPU you have.

The 1050Ti uses much less power than an RX570, because the OP is using a prebuilt PC i'd recommend the 1050Ti instead.

Uhu.. right, amd in general is quite a bit cheaper than their intel counterpart... also, AMD make damn good CPU’s nowadays. 

 

Cant speak for GPU’s as I’ve never used one from AMD.

The CPU will still probably end up as a bottleneck, but bottlenecks just mean your fully utilizing a component and shouldn't be a bad thing always.

Most likely the CPU isn't going to be a bottleneck with a GTX 1050 Ti

Yes it will, it will match up close to the FX-8350 in benchmarks and I have had personal experience of an overclocked FX bottlenecking the 1050 TI. It's a surprisingly good GPU for 1080p gaming. In some more Vram intensive games it will fall behind but it's very nice for what it does bring.

At least my Xeon doesn't bottleneck my GTX 960 at all. Even my i7-950 (Xeon W3550) didn't bottleneck it.

The gtx 960s Vram holds it back in more modern titles.  In older titles that are less Vram intensive it can pull a bit ahead in some cases.

You mean the drivers? They are superior to Nvidia's, both in design and function.

RX 570 is cheaper than 1050 Ti, yet noticeably more powerful. The only scenario where 1050 Ti over RX 570 makes sense is if you try to build SFF system or use a bad PSU

Assuming he has an i7 920 and not an It 8xx something your chip is still more powerful than his.
