I just came across this amazing new receiver (Denon AVR-X8500H) that has 13.2 channel surround sound with support for Atmos and 4K.  I tried to find a good video that really gets down and dirty with it like you guys do but there doesn't seem to be any out there.  As a huge fan of the channel and a huge tech nerd I would love to see you guys break it down for us and really put it to the test.

Not always and if they are interested enough in a product they can work with the company to receive a review unit that they send back afterwards or keep depending on the price and company.

LTT isn't about HiFi-stuff, at least I don't think testing and all of high-end AV-equipment fits the channel. There are other channels dedicated to stuff like this.

Seriously, why? If you REALLY need 14 channels of audio to be satisfied when watching a video then... well... something is wrong with you and/or you have too much money.

 

Dolby atmos scales to all speakers/headphones. You really don't need 14 channels to get the surround sound experience. Just put some headphones on and go on youtube and look up 3D sound.

The idea behind something like this is usually for people that love watching aaa movies and have their own home theater setups. This isnt really intended for anyone in the main LTT demographic, but its still cool nonetheless.

I thought most movies were encoded in 5.1 still unless you get bluray, which is mostly 7.1 still. I ended up moving my two rear surrounds up front and assigning them to play the same as the two existing fronts. Not enough material even took advantage of 7.1

I thought the same thing, but Dolby Atmos processes the sound differently and scales to any number of speakers.

dear god, the room for that many speakers HAS to be huge. my theater room is the size of a 2 car garage and 5.1 is plenty

Things like that have a very specific use case. And no you don’t have to have something wrong with you to need or want to 13 channel. It’s a hobby. Sorry it’s not part of the LTT demographic, not the point of that receiver. 

 

I know it looks scary on the back, but in reality, you’ll only use half of those ports, maybe, if that. All depends on your use case and what you need it for. You can most definitely tell a difference between 5.1 and something like this.  It’s a completely different experience watching the correct content.

 

what is it that you want to know about a receiver like this compared to just a standard 7.2 atmos receiver?

Movie theaters use quite a few channels from what I remember. Not sure what all has changed recently though.

Obviously this isn't necessary but is it really necessary to be able to play your video games at 100+ FPS??  The whole reason I think a video should be made about this by LMG is because it is brand new tech and there is nothing else like it in the world.  Even if this isn't going to be bought by 99% of the viewers I still believe that a channel that prides itself on being all about the tech should want to do a video on this.

Dolby atmos has been around since 2012. Dolby atmos as a system can scale to any number of channels be it 2 or 14. This just so happens to be the first receiver that allows you to hook up 14 speakers. (Probably because no one in their right mind would want to hook up 14 speakers.....)

16.2, upscale a few channels using rca splitters, i keep the volume real low due to the room being about 10ft by 15ft and about 7 ft ceilings (it is my bedroom.. ;/) and i use a whole mix of speakers, some old sony ones, some old jvc ones, a whole mix of companies really, alot from my uncles wife's dad, who is also a big audiophile and general tech nerd, i just love being surrounded by audio, especially using auro 3d.

10x15? and using 16 channels? can you even see your ceiling ?

Well i cant either due to there being a loft above my room so the cavity inbetween the loft/attic floor and my ceiling is about an inch.
