Quad-Channel RAM on 2600x

Im a bit of a PC noob. I used to have someone who helped me looking for parts I'd need, until he sold me 1066MHz 2x8GB DDR4 RAM that would work on my new 2600x AMD CPU

 

so, the 1066MHz RAM immensely slowed down my 2600x. I tried putting my old 2133 MHz 2x 4GB RAM sticks in, that ran a whole lot better. 

another friend of mine could loan me two sticks of 2133MHz 4GB DDR4 RAM, until I have enough money to get decent 2933 MHz 2x8GB sticks

now my question is, can the 2600x handle Quad Channel RAM in a 4x4GB 2133 MHz configuration?

4 memory slots doesn't mean Quad Channel, but yes you can populate those 4 memory slots but it will still be Dual Channel.

 

2 memory slots per channel, that's how it's configured

4x4gb is not quad channel, it just uses 2 sticks per channel, and that does work.

that doesnt exist. Even counting in servers which are the first to use DDR4, it only goes as low as 1600. More common speeds start at 2133.

Yea, never heard of 1066MHz DDR4, 1066 is half of 2133, so I think its probably actually 2133MHz ram anyway. And your motherboard/cpu doesn't have Quad Channel Memory support, it will just use 2 slots per channel.

 

So for the mean time, why not run your one of your 8GB sticks and one of your 4GB sticks per channel for now. As they are probably the same speed.

1066x2 = 2132... so yeah it's just common 2133mhz memory that he has... which obviously bottlenecks the Ryzen chips as we all know.

 

Also means that going from 2x8gb 2133mhz to 2x4gb 2133mhz is obviously not going to do any good so OP shouldn't even bother with the swap.

Also as many pointed out, no such thing as quad channel in Ryzen mainstream, however you can use 4 sticks yup and if OP can get a 3000mhz kit to work at 2933mhz that'd help out a lot.

Thanks for responding!

The games I tried (Elite: Dangerous and Just Cause 3) run a lot better at this config. It could also be that the old ones are from proper Kingston HyperX Fury, and that the 2x8GB ones are some budget thing without a cover. Just a plain thing with the memory modules soldered onto it. 

 

also thanks for explaining the difference between dual and quad channel. I will try to go 4x4GB then for the time being, until I can afford 2933MHz 2x8GB sticks

A friend of mine has a 3200kit on a 1700 which runs 3133, so Id expect the sticks to be able to run 3000mhz

You guys think I should try re-using the 2x8GB RAM? 

 

well...

my upgrade to the 2600x took place on saturday. So if it was plugged in poorly it would've been plugged in better while doing that upgrade

by getting some high quality sticks with at least 3000 mhz. hulp nodig?
