Good value for a 100$ used buy

Awesome. Thanks for that. When i turn Vsync off i get 99% GPU usage.

That's fair, but the OP is on a non HT sandybridge chip at much lower frequency.

I had an 8600K (same chip pretty much) and at 5Ghz that lad kept up with SLI 1080s easily (99% scaling in Battlefront 2015 since that game ran the smoothest on the GPUs, ran at 1080p and DSR for 1440p and 4K, even at 4K that combo pushed 130-144fps). A 9600K at the same speed should be awesome. If that's what you want then go for it, there's always gonna be something better just around the corner. If it's not within 2-3 months of launch I'd just go with what's out now.

As for all the peeps recommending AMD, it's because their Ryzen platform has been really great so far, and the Zen 2 chips are competing with Intel's flagships easily. Problem there is I've only seen benches vs stock Intel chips. If you're going for performance, the 9000 series on Intel's side usually OCs to 500-600Mhz faster than the Ryzen offerings, which should give it an advantage in gaming. They cost more (at least in the US market), but Intel chips didn't magically become garbage because of Zen 2. If you're comfortable on Intel and don't want to move to AMD, there's no need to.

not only cpu oc, but memory aswell

I cant get my ryzen stable at 3733 mhz (memory) The best i could do now at 1.5v is 3600ram at 14-18-17-28-84-1t . Yet my 2016 6700k ran at 4266 24/7 with exceptional scores and 38 ns latency. In the games i play (or used to) the difference was night and day as you never were GPU bound

Im not switching back to intel, but i wont deny what its right in front of my eyes. If all you care is gaming, and you really really need the extra framerate, you'll be better of buying intel. Sadly i dont think they will lower prices

    i had a 6700k at 4.7 ghz. Now i have a ryzen 3600. Do i notice a performance deficit in gaming?

Absolutely. 6700k was much much better. Ofc it depends on the games you play. Grimdawn, dota 2, starcraft 2, custom games. Very noticeable on all of them (144hz monitor) . But i dont play much now days and i really need render, compression and decompression. And dont have much cash ( the change didnt cost me more than 30 us$).

I would not asking that question here, where people recommend i7-8700k as minimum requirement for Solitaire.
IMO it wil be still great CPU even after 4 years.
I bet after 4 years if someone asks is i7-8700k good enough, people here answers than no, it's crap, because "now processors have 12 cores or more". Number of cores is not the only factor - important is what powerful these cores are and if you can use them. For example - in almost every games tests, 4c/4t i5-8400 beats 6c/12t Ryzen 1600x. Magic? Not really. Some mobile phones has 8 cores processors but that doesn't mean they're more powerful than Core2Duo. Also - producers do not make games for 2% of the people who has i9+2080. Your processor is very good and still will be good after 4 years, it's not some cheap i3, Pentium or Celeron.

FellTheSky got a reaction from JoeCoke in Is 1.45v "too much" for an i7 2600k?
not worth it for 24/7. Gains are marginal. If you really need more performance, you should upgrade.

But its always fun to see how much can you push it

It's a great CPU, the workloads I do though prefer 6+ cores and higher clocks are always better! Also the Ryzen 3800(x) does seem appetizing after looking at those supposed specs!

If you're getting a 1080 Ti for low resolution high refresh rate 144hz gaming you should really consider the i5 8600K / i7 8700 / i7 8700K to keep things balanced.

as previously mentioned grab the cheapest cpu that the motherboard supports and do some testing with that.

it's possible that the board he bought is just broken..

another possibility is that he did something with the pc that he didn't tell you... ask him what he did before it broke again.

I think I would agree that the CPU could have been damaged. Usually a component will fire up like that when voltages are bad and go crazy, usually from bad power delivery and/or bad PSU. It wouldnt be the first time that something like this didnt take other components with it.

You are right to suspect the cpu, but you should try a different power supply/hdd but also put a fan blowing onto his motherboard to cool it down, also test with one stick of the cheapest ram you have.

80+c seems way too high for CPU VRMs.

It definitely sounds like it could be a CPU issue. FX chips can be pretty cheap on ebay or Craigslist, just grab essentially a burner chip for a low price and see if that's the problem.

In all honesty i think this results are a bit dubious.
Ive build a lot of machines with low end i5's and i never saw anything remotely close to that stuttering mess.
Would you try 1 game with stock clocks and 1866 rams?

You've waited so long, just wait a bit more  for the lower end ryzen cpus. Even if you dont buy them, hopefully they will lower prices on the i5's to compete.

ram helps for the stuttering, not the framerate. Check on msi afterburner how high your ram usage and pagefile usage goes while playing. If its too high ram will help with stuttering
