Upgrading CPU

Hello, 

I have read many posts about the subject but could not pinpoint exactly what is recommended to do in my situation. I was running 1070 with 6600k but then I saw 1080ti for $450 so I got it and also purchased a 165 Hertz 1440p screen by Adele. My CPU is overclocked to 4.3 and I started noticing drops in my FPS which I can attribute to the CPU. I have a good aftermark cooler and debating what's my best solution for upgrade in around $400.

Another question I had is weather my RAM sticks that I 2666 can work well on an AMD cpu.

Get an used 7700K and overclock.

Just overclock the 6600k more, most Skylake CPUs are good for 4.6GHz+, averaging at about 4.8GHz

Ok I'm overclocked to 4.6 I'll give it a shot, worst case scenario it will hold me untill ryzen 3 comes out

Yeah I would wait for Zen 3 & either get one of those or get a price-dropped 8700K/9900K setup.

What price drops?? The 8700k is the same price forever pretty much... Its time to hope for an AMD miracle

After Zen 3, IF it performs the way AMD says it does, Intel won't have much of a choice but to drop prices. That's a big IF though.

used 7700k to 5ghz  and 3200 mhz rams

So I played Batman Arkham Knight, on 1440p max setting it kept jumping up and down from 85-45 I don't know if that is the ram or the cpu... I really don't think the Gpu is the problem

Push up the graphics settings. This gives the GPU more work and should lighten the load on the CPU. You'll have a prettier game as well.

 

I would wait for the next gen of Ryzen or maybe the next Intel generation. The current generations have been around for a while

If you want to check if your GPU is being bottlenecked by the CPU just look for GPU usage while gaming.

If you want to use MSI AfterBurner for that, make sure to turn on "Unified GPU usage monitoring" in the settings of the program.

If you see your GPU usage dropping and failing to reach 95% and up while your CPU is used a lot, you're experiencing a bottleneck and need a faster CPU.

Thank you, that seems like a good course of action, I have the software, were do I check gpu usage? On the button graph?

I am on the highest possible, sew on YouTube I shouldn't go bellow 90 all the time...

The most it got was 60% im in serious bottleneck

Wait, 60% CPU usage or 60% GPU usage? Which game, Batman Arkham Knight?

On that resolution with the i5 the GPU should reach 100% without any real problems in most games.

 

Some games have a hard lock on FPS that you can reach in game, and if that hard lock is reached although the GPU could do a lot more, the GPU utilization will behave similarly to bottlenecking. Could that be the case? Can you try with other games?

I usually use Battlefield titles in multiplayer to show as examples of games where the CPU would bottleneck the GPU if there's a huge disbalance in the system.

It was 60% gpu and it is locked to 90 fps but it rarely get there
