Considering that the 3600 is only a little more expensive. I would say no since the 3600 is better in every way possible.
But if you absolutely can't afford the 3600 and the 3300x is out of stock/ usually more expensive. The 1600 af should he fine.

3600 should be totally fine, perhaps even more than tottally fine. Just make sure to get a decent-ish gpu, such as a radeon 570, or 5500xt, or 1650super, should futureproof the rig for further useage down the road for gaming. If he/you dont know, building it yourself is a great way to save hundreds, even on lower-end systems, and on the low-end, many system builders cheap out in any way possibly to get the spec sheet to look decent, and the price to something "reasonable," but trust me, It's pretty likely to crap out on you over a long period of time, but other than that prebuilding is fine I guess..

Clockspeed won't kill a CPU, voltage will.

The cooler is a waste of money. Any small air cooler will be more than enough for a 3600 or 3700X

The board price is also.a bit high as B550 models are around the same money and several times better

StrawberryShortCakes reacted to SnowyMus in Is this still worth buying?
As you said, you have the 3700X. You'll probably find that, while the 1800X may a better value as a strict performance-per-dollar metric, it can fall behind significantly in a number of tasks. As a workstation CPU, if you were on a tight budget and had little choice for eight core CPUs, $200 wouldn't be too bad for the 1800X, but even then, the 3600 does most of those tasks better despite having two fewer cores and four fewer threads.

If you do choose to get it, note that its boosting behavior is different from the newer Zen 2 CPUs, thus it will benefit from an all-core overclock. If I recall correctly, OCs of 3.9-4.05 GHz are pretty typical of the original Zen CPUs without any exotic cooling.

not worth it in my opinion. you can find a 3600, which is better in 90% of cases unless the workload is purely multi threaded.

And this is why my county "singapore" our government chosen to give free electronics/computer/smartphone courses for the older generation.
I don't need a plan to have ppl boycott intel, all I have to do is share Mr Linus's vid to all my online "elderly" friends and ask them to share to theirs, and that's a beginning.
