Just note, the PSU's of today have great capacitors that needs to be charged.
This is a huge spike/drain on the houses power system.
And also the constant charging and emptying fully isnt the best use for those capacitors.
But they should be rated for many power ons and power offs.

But all in all by flipping that switch you're introducing more points of failure.
Just reason for yourself if it outweighs the risk of leaving it connected.

And if you're really afraid of power surges, use a surge protecting power strip.
    https://www.amazon.com/GE-Outlet-Protector-Extension-14092/dp/B00DOMYL24/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=Surge%2BProtectors&s=aht&sr=1-6&th=1

And also, just don't buy powerstrips with damn lights or switches in them.
They are the biggest point of failure on powerstrips.

I used to switch off my PSU when I would be gone for longer periods. What I learned the hard way is that is a perfect way to drain the CMOS battery on your motherboard. When your PSU is switched on, your motherboard draws very little power to keep volatile memory charged instead of using the battery. While on many motherboards, replacing the CMOS battery is easy and cheap, on many others it's a pain to get to (behind shielding, thicc GPU blocking it).

Personally, I only switch off my PSU when working on the PC or moving/unplugging the PC. I see others mentioning thunderstorms and can understand doing that as well, but in general you should get a surge protector for those concerns.

So it was turned on, until it was 'last night'.
Even tho English isn't my first language this looks pretty obvious?
I'm sorry i cannot make it any clearer then this.
But lets not pollute this topic with our misunderstanding. 🙂

Yeah tell him, if he wants solutions he needs to be as precise as he can, without the exaggeration as that helps no one.
Make him check to be sure there are no cables around that can fall onto the fan blades, as that can be somewhat loud.
Altho the sound that was described, that's almost a physical impossibility, for the hardware to do so, unless something was added like a speaker and amp. 😄

HanZie82 reacted to Needfuldoer in Over current after breaking my usb port
That mangled pin is shorting +5v to ground. Your motherboard detects this and shuts the USB controller off to protect it.

Like others said, you need to get all the pins on that port separated so they're not touching the sides or each other. Once that pin stops touching the side, your motherboard should work again and you can forget that port exists.

You should be able to do this with a tiny screwdriver, or bend a little hook in the end of an unbent paper clip, or pick up a cheap pick set like this one.

turn off your computer, and unplug all cables, including, very obviously, the power cable.

    Leave it for 10 minutes.

    Do not skip those steps.

Use a small, thing flatheaded screwdriver tip to pry those pins AWAY from the inner housing - the pins should be touching _absolutely nothing at all_, not even each other.

Once you have done that, put some electrical tape over the socket and never touch it again.

    Try booting.

You may have fried the USB hub chip inside but those pins touching the housing/each other is likely the cause.

I know that people being loosey-goosey with "literally" is a losing/lost battle at this point, but Jesus Christ, nothing makes me see red more than people using vague, hyperbolic, anthropomorphized language to describe computer problems.

    "My PC is tripping bro!"

"All of a sudden my computer just started going crazy!"

Nothing in a GPU is capable of making the type/level of noise he describes.
  14. Agree
HanZie82 reacted to Dedayog in Computer Screaming at Night
No.  A GPU can't make that amount of noise.  The fans can whine but not that loud  The electronics can coil whine but not that loud.

There isn't anything there to make that noise.  Not like a car's belts what can rub and screech.

He is exaggerating, and pretty badly at that.  Or outright lying.

Did he mention giving the card back to you, and getting his money back at all?  🙂

Ask him if after powering down the screaming slowd down, as in a wire touching a fan.
    Accidents during install happen.
    Let him re-check the cabling.

Also because of the fact it happened at night i doubt the loudness, it might've felt like its loud but really isnt.

Just one of the possibilities. 🙂

Just so people know. If there was an app for this forum it would just be a website in an app (not even a real app, just some browser-wrapper).
You can already do that. Just bookmark the page to your homescreen, and drag the shortcut to your desired place.
Only reason navigation would be easier is because they would change the internet pages to work better in said app.
Why dont ask them to do that on the mobile version of the website.

Because of this there are no real good arguments for an app.

(Notifications should already work, if they dont, blame your browser)
(Navigation is already really good if it needs changing it can be done on the site)

What would be the thing mobile app gives that mobile browsing doesn't? For most it has been notifications, but those depend on your chosen browser.
