Does anyone know if FreeNAS supports SMB 3.0?  I'm interested in doing this between my desktop and my FreeNAS server.

No, skylake CPUs are socket 1151
If youre just gaming, save up for a 4690k
if you do more stuff like editing, rendering, and other content creation then get a xeon 1231v3
or if you want to go all out, save up to a 4790k, the best CPU on 1150

As Tedster already said, neither of those devices (switch and router) are capable of link aggregation. For link aggregation to work both interfaces must support it. It's pretty basic networking. I would advise you to read this wikipedia article first, and either skip the aggregation thing completely (it's useless in your situation in my opinion) or buy new compatible gear.

But I'm confused about why you used this card in the first place. Even if your setup could work, what would be the benefit? To use the 2gbit bandwith you must either have another pc with the same nic, or have a lot of clients that you serve data from your pc.

I learned this the hard way too. I wanted to have link aggregation on my NAS and desktop but I found out I bought the wrong switch. Need one that supports 802.3ad.

There are different teaming options, your switch/router does not support LACP, you can only use switch independent teaming, set your 2nd nic to be the standby adapter. you will not get an increase in performance, but should the primary nic die or the cable is damaged, it will fail-over to the 2nd nic.

Well you said you don't do gaming and most of the work rendering a video is done on the CPU.

A 290 would be severely under utilized by your uses 99% of the time. I would wait for the 300 series to release if you're really in no rush, the 290 might go down in price then and would work for years along with being capable if you change your monitor for one with a larger resolution.

Why on earth would you spend that much money on a GPU and not use it?

Why would you buy a card like this if you're not going to use it to any of it's potential? Get something like a GT 740.

So the card works improperly in two pcs.  I say RMA it if you still can.  Also if it is not under warranty you could try the baking method.

Here is Linus doing it ..

.. and unfortunately it did not work for him but it has worked for many people.

The Tek Syndicate guys do some stuff.. like discussing pfSense.. and some NAS stuff.. But it's not necessarily the be all end all of those things. I'd love to watch things about.. the best way to setup your NAS.. giving a low, medium and high price point.. and just more networking info and hardware / software in general from you guys!

Hey, so i was looking for UV LED's. I was thinking of getting the Phobya UV LED's. but for 6cm it was over $30.... $25 for led's plus shipping...

I looked into ebay and got 5 meters of UV LED's! got a 4pin molex to sata cable, remover the red a back wired. and solder to yellow one to the red, and black to black. so 12v....

this 5meters of UV LED's was only $14 free shipping!

Either go triple 120 or mod, don't try jam a triple 140 inside the case, a ghetto external mount would honestly be better.

I don't think I have to removed the top drive cages... and I might just drill some holes. or ghetto mounted it...
Do you guys think i would see a big difference in temps if lets say the part of the 1st fan ( 1st fan being the in the front) is half cover with the metal? I'm just saying in case i don't drill the holes.
I really want to go with a triple 140 and not a 120... and its only a like $10 USA difference between them...

the 4770k will probably be faster than the 7850, however, be sure to disable gpu rendering, or to force cpu rendering, otherwise it will still try to have the gpu help, and it will get screwed up, i built a system with a 3930k and a 7970, and it was rendering alright, but it was slower than my machine with an 8120, until i realized that the cpu wasnt even reaching 25% usage while rendering, i tweaked my editing programs (I use both CS6 and Vegas, as well as many different 3d animation/modeling programs) to use the cpu exclusively (besides Inventor, it really does benefit from the gpu) and now it can spit out a 30 sec 4k clip in a few seconds. (I oc'ed it to 4.8GHz as well..haven't updated my sig yet) also, i would still upgrade that poor little 220 either way

You should be able to raid 2 different ssds but I wouldn't recommend it. The only improvement would be faster sequential reads/writes which aren't what makes a ssd feel snappy. What makes it feel fast is the random reads and the memory controller. Because of this, ssds in raid 0 may actually end up slower than a single one. The array is also more likely to fail than separate drives.

Ok, thanks, I had read the first sticky, and then I found "Ghost's Low Budget Water Cooling Loop Plan" Greatest thread ever. The case I will use will probably be the Switch 810. Classy looking and great WC support for a good price.

EDIT: Also, is an XSPC Bay-Res and D5 pump ok?

ericks_comp reacted to Ghost in Best Watercooling Kit--Swiftech or XSPC?
Do not buy kits. There are various reasons for this. I should start off by saying there is nothing bad with a kit. It will work properly and would will have a loop by the end of it. However, in kits the parts you get are typically low-end. I would never recommend a non-laing pump for a loop. Laing pumps are known for being quiet and reliable working for years without any issues. This is just an example. Kits tend to have lower quality everything. Secondly when buying a kit you will not be able to prioritise what you want in a loop. Maybe you are focusing on performance, maybe on looks? A kit will not give you this choice.

Most importantly a kit will not let you learn. Believe me when I say water cooling is a big investment, not only of money but also of time. If you feel that taking your time to look up components and make a parts list and doing research is something you would rather not do then you will be in for a shock later on. If you ever have a problem with your loop you will be much better placed after you have done your research and after selecting your own parts.

Therefore I advise you to go to the two stickys HERE and HERE and spend time reading about watercooling, then make a parts list and draw a diagram of what your loop is going to be, then ask us to review your parts and let you know what we think of the parts you have chosen.
